Odd Access Issue - Help appreciated

I just set up a My Cloud 6T drive, and followed all instructions, then performed a backup. So far, all good.
When I go to my file manager, and click on WDMYCLOUD, it is asking me for a log-in and asks for my Account Name and Network Password. When I enter these, it fails. I have tried different ‘Account Names’ but it always locks me out.

Now, the weird part is there are two other computers on my network. Both of these can view the backed up files on the My Cloud without being asked for a login.

I want to block these computers, or at least make them require passwords, but my main machine, hard-wired to the MyCloud should not be asking for a password.

I have spent hours trying to fix this, and am stumped. Can anyone help?

John

Sorry, how is your main machine connected to the MyCloud?

MyCloud should be connected to your router. Your PCs should be connected to your router. They should access your MyCloud via your router.

All accessing devices should require a password to access any Private shares on the MyCloud. You should only need to do this once, and windows should remember those credentials for that PC user.

Anyone with network access can access the Public share.

You must use the same credentials when accessing public or private shares, and those credentials must be MyCloud user credentials. This is a widely-discussed issue with Windows network drive access.

@JohnFingerman If you haven’t already and you have Windows 10 try your Microsoft sign in, example:

JohnDoe@msn.com and your msn password

Is this what you are seeing?

I should have explained what I meant by ‘hard wired’. I mean my main computer is connected to my router using a network cable. The MyDrive is also correctly connected to the router.
All the files I backed up are in the ‘Smartware’ folder on the MyDrive. There are no files in the public area, yet other computers on my network may access the files in the ‘Smartware’ folder without a password, yet I am not able to see these files, as I cannot log in.

Yes, that is exactly what I see. I am using Windows 7, and I tried my network credentials, as it asks, then I tried the log in I created when I installed the MyDrive, and then a combination of both, but nothing lets me view the files on this computer. (though I can view them without logging in on the other 2 machines on my network, which I want to disable)

I was finally able to log in. Windows had changed my user name to all upper case, and once I typed it that way I got in.

However …

I’ve attached a screen cap. I may access the ‘John’ and ‘Public’ folders (which are both empty) but not the ‘SmartWare’ or ‘TimeMachineBackup’ folders. When I try to, I get the message attached. All of my backup files are in the ‘SmartWare’ folder, visible from the other computers on my network.

I find it odd that the 2 other machines may view this folder without a password, yet I cannot.

The screen capture you posted indicates the problem. It is a Windows limitation that prevents one from using more than ONE user name from accessing the My Cloud. Typically the workaround is to disconnect any mapped drives, close any open Windows File Explorer windows, access the Windows Credentials Manager and remove any listings for My Cloud. Then try accessing the My Cloud again.

UPDATE: I began a backup into the ‘John’ folder, and I am able to view the files on my main computer. Unfortunately, the other users on the network also have access.
