Hi. I used to own an earlier WDTV model but it lacked features I needed so I switched to Seagate’s Freeagent Theatre+. The current WD line up looks interesting, though, and I’m thinking of buying a WD TV Live or WD TV Live Plus. How would folks feel about answering a few questions for me? (1) The Matroska specifications include a feature called “header removal compression”. Do current WD players support header compression in .mkv files? (2) When I owned a WDTV there was a frame rate limitation on the .mkv files that it would play. Is this still the case? (3) My WDTV took quite a while to index new content before ti was playable. Has the indexing speed been improved? (5) Do current WD boxes support DVD menus? How about DVD menus in .iso files? (6) Will they play the DTS core contained within the DTS-MA audio stream of a .mkv file? (7) What’s the current maximum Fast Forward speed for .mkv files? It used to be woefully slow. Can the players skip forward through a film in 20 increments? (That’s a Seagate feature). Thanks to all. Much appreciated.
P.S. Forgot to mention. I play files from an external drive, not via a network.
If your read any consumer forum you will find 100 different answers from 100 different people. Most of the video issues posted on the internet regarding ripping and video streaming are not the fault of the streaming box but user ignorance. Don’t purchase any product just on a brand name. Purchase the product because it will do your particular job. Sit down and compare the official product specifications from both manufacturers, then make an informed decision based on the manufacturers specifications and price. I purchased a WDTV Live because I have simple video streaming requirements and the WDTV Live does my job more than adequately. I use an attached 2TB WD USB drive because it is simple to disconnect from the WDTV Live, plug into the computer and transfer movies on the computer to the WD USB drive. I can do the same task over the network; too slow and ties up the network.
Well, the WD TV Live Plus handles the menus off of DVD ISOs without a problem. It’s really good when you have a DVD with multiple episodes on it - makes it much easier to find what you want.
I’ve not seen any issues with indexing content, and I access a NAS with a lot of files.
Can’t address your other questions though I’m sure someone here may be able to help you. Also, my comments are for the WD TV Live Plus.
