Password problem, i seem to be getting nowhere?

recently I really did want to use my MY BOOK LIVE to restore a Time Machine backup to my MacBookPro

i then discovered i needed a password, i hadnt ever given it a password, in fact i am dammed sure i was never asked for one, so my MyBookLive was behaving like a heap of junk !!. Happily i had another TM backup on a MyPassport USB drive which saved the day and my life !!!.

Back with a working computer i found the user manual in my MacBookPro and read all about setting the password to the Defaualt password, so i then tried to Log On as Administrator to my MBL using this default password, it DID NOT work !, previously i had ONLY ever logged on as GUEST, i didnt know i needed a password to be able to RESTORE !!!

Anyway i phoned up Support a nice lady told me that the defaut password in the manual was WRONG and i should use WD_BACKUP and BACKUP (all caps)  which STILL DID NOT WORK   !.

I phoned support again a nice fella told me the password should be in lowercase i.e. backup

IT STILL DOES NOT WORK  !!!.

What on earth have i got to do here lads/lasses please. Obviously WD Support dont know the answer does anyone else PLEASE

You dont need to use a user name and pasword to log into your My Book, you can just select to log in as a guest. Time machine appears to use another type of password setup.

Found this on Apple support

Network-based Time Machine backups use disk images for individual backups. The network share containing the disk image is secured with the password specified in Time Machine preferences. Only the Time Machine administrator, or other users trusted to have access to all backed up data, should be given the password for network-based Time Machine backups.

Ok pal that is fine if it is going to work ??? actually that link didnt work when i just tried it  LOL.

So to log in NOT AS GUEST but as administrator i should be able to use the same password and username as i use to log into my computer with my Apple ID ? well that doesnt work !.

Surely i should be able to log in as something or other so i can be sure that the dammed thing will restore from MyBookLive when i NEED it to, as this didnt happen before.

So the information i have been told is no dammed good to anybody ?, this info being, direct from WD Support, that i can reset the MyBookLive to the default username and password by pressing the reset button ?

I havent set a username and password in Time Machine ???

So why doesnt WD Support know what they are doing and why arent they here helping me, i dont have any confidence in phoning them up anymore, similarly i dont have any confidence in using MyBookLive to restore my Lap Top from a Time Machine backup !, so it is still only fit to be a door stop

Can I please bump this thread?

I seem to have the same problem with my 2TB MyBookLive which I just bought yesterday.  I’m still able to access the drive (currently copying/backing-up files/pictures).  I was able to install & upgrade firmware, login & out (from Dashboard) using a password.  But after a while, it kicked me out and displayed the UI/login screen.  I can enter my password and it looks like it’s accepting it & my browser (IE 9) is communicating with the device, but it displays the same UI/login screen asking for a password.  If I type the wrong password, it tells me so with an error message.  But the correct password doesn’t do anything.  I need the Dashboard to setup its remote/Cloud connection.

I’m hoping there’s new information regarding this thread before I call WD support.  I’m afraid to get the same run-around as stated here.  Can anybody please offer any idea?

Thank you!

hi buddy, i didnt get any worthwhile help from WD themselves, although i did get a lot of help on this forum :wink: , i suggest you do a RESET this gives you the default username and password, the trouble with that is, not many folk know what it is, please dont laugh !. that, is TRUE

I do believe, IF i remember correctly ?, i found it to be :-

username = wd_backup

password = backup

i was able to log in with this, sufficiently to do a dummy run RESTORE, which is, after all is said and done, ALL I WANT the dammed thing to do !!!
