Please help this problem get fixed

My Cloud users,

I posted an issue in the DL series My Cloud forum, which likely affects the basic My Cloud, too. Please help it be approved by WD for action by clicking “Like” at the bottom of the linked post. The problem concerns the DLNA database. Thanks for any votes.

I have had many problems with Twonky. But needing to rebuild the database is not one I’ve experienced.

I might wonder if a media file is corrupt. I might also try a different DLNA client; maybe the built-in Twonky media browser?

I am adding and removing media (mostly video in MP4 format) to a v4.x single bay My Cloud several times a day and rarely have a problem with the DLNA/Twonky database using several Roku’s, and BubbleUPnP on several Android devices, and Windows Media Player on several Windows PC’s. Once in a blue moon I do have to rebuild the database, last time was a few days ago, prior to that I went more than four months since the last time I had to rebuild the database. Twonky has its issues to be sure but for me, database problems are not one that typically crop up.

As you likely know the database is rebuilt whenever one clicks on “Rebuild” (DLNA database) from the Dashboard, and It uses the Twonky built into the NAS. I doubt a corrupt file, because it is always the newest addition video(s) that are the victims. This does not happen every time a video is added, because I have checked after adding some and there is no problem, but once in a while there is.

As I said above, this doesn’t happen every time a video is added. What was the problem that prompted you to rebuild the database the other day; same issue I described?

No my issue was a bit different. The DLNA database was duplicating each media file so I had two of every media file when viewing with a DLNA client. Yet only a single file was was present. Had to clear the cache via the Twonky admin page then do a full rebuild to clear the issue.

Your issue almost sounds like the DLNA client isn’t properly refreshing the media list from the My Cloud (edit: like its using a cached copy). My Roku player has a somewhat similar problem. If I’m viewing a listing of files and copy a file into that same folder location on the My Cloud the file doesn’t get listed on the Roku until I exit out of the My Cloud media server then have the Roku reconnect to it.

I have sort of considered that as a culprit too, so I have closed the Client on the iPad (the MediaPlay app) and then reopened it, because there doesn’t seem to be a way to make MediaPlay refresh its data. This doesn’t help. I will look harder for a way. Maybe it is the iPad not flushing the app’s cache (so I will explore for a way to do that as well). I hope you have it pegged; that would be nice.

It does appear to be an issue looking at files via DLNA, because I think apps that look via network shares (SMB) don’t have an issue with this. I will check for this next time something is amiss with MediaPlay. BTW, MediaPlay is the Belkin version of (now defunct) Twonky Beam app.

I can also see how things look on my Kindle Fire tablet with it’s installed DLNA apps. e.g. Bubble/UPnP and Avia. I do have enough clients and apps to double check with.
