Possible fix for network shares and NAS

Hello all.  Just bought a WD TV Live Hub a few days ago (my first WD product).  I turned it on, updated the firmware, and tried to connect to my NAS shares.  It can see my NAS in the server list, but when I clicked on it, I was stuck in the endless “enter password” + “you’re password is incorrect” loop.

My NAS is a ReadyNAS 600.  I’ve had it for many years and I’ve never had anything that couldn’t enumerate and access it shares.  Security wise, it is configured to be wide open.  I’ve never needed to enter credentials for it.

I was able to access my NAS from my WD TV via DLNA, but I wanted share access for ISOs, VOBs, etc.  I read the forums and tried all the suggestions.  I checked my workgroup, did lots of nbtstats, shut down all the computers on my network, booted the WD TV first, tweaked many settings on the NAS, etc.

In the end, the fix that worked for me was to change my NAS from “share mode” to “user mode”.  After that, I’m able to create a dummy user on my NAS with a name and password, and use that user to log in with when prompted by the WD TV.

I really wish I didn’t have to do this.  My NAS threw up some warnings about how changing the mode might hose some security ACLs on disk, but I haven’t had to deal with any issues.  It also broke some other devices that access my NAS, but I think I can fix up all those to use the new settings.

If it’s OPEN, all you should use on the Live is the default username “anonymous” and an empty password.  Have you tried that?

Yep, tried that and dozens of other things.  When the ReadyNAS is in share mode, it says it will accept any credentials if specified and ignore them.  They recommend just using guest/guest if prompted.  It tried the default the WD TV suggested (which is anonymous/), and also tried anonymous/anonymous, anonymous/, guest/guest, guest/, and several others.

From my other devices, I never need credentials at all.  From Windows/OSX, I just use "\NAS\media" and I’m in.  Same for my XBMC devices and Boxee.

I never tried the old WD firmware, but from reading the forums, it sounds like a lot of people said network shares used to work and stopped working after the latest firmware.  Maybe something changed about how SMB credentials are handled.
