Power surge fried HDD's WD1001FALS and WD4001FAEX, help?

Recently, a power surge fried my 1000w PSU with loud pop and fried 3 HDD’s and a BD Writer ! I need to have my data savaged but cannot afford the ridiculously high fees associated with data recovery. Could someone help me with the repair of these drives, please ?

I have attached pictures of PCB’s for both the drives showing fried VCM chips. The fried chip on WD1001FALS has pins protrudine, hence may be possible to replace it but, fried chip for WD4001FAEX has pins underneath it and I am not sure how to go about it.

Could someone take a look at these pictures and let me know if this is something that can be fixed by replacing chips alone or could it be possible that the damage might have extended to the motor and other components on the PCB ? I am thinking of getting replacement PCB’s with the firmware chip on WD4001FAEX swapped with the one from the damaged PCB. Not sure about WD1001FALS, as there seems to be no chip at U2, perhaps the MCU ? If it is the MCU, how do you go about copying the FW to the new PCB ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I’d recommend contacting a specialized Data Recovery service instead of attempting repairs as it could further compromise your data.

AlexBw,
I do not know if it’s already been tried by others but if the data is on the disks, why not try to find a HD used with the same features and operating system, remove the power and control card and install it on your HD instead of that fried?
It may be enough to recover the data, and also use a lot of savings … replacing a card is much simpler than replacing a microchip … very delicate job but could be a solution! “Sorry I did not notice the date”

If the information on the hard drives is critical I would try a data recovery service.
