So I recently picked up a WD TV hub an I’ve started backing up my DVD collection. I’ve been ripping to full quality ISOs (about 8 GB a piece ) which i’m hoping is unnecessary. 2 questions though:
1.) Are there any suggestions on a smaller file format that would still retain the original DVD menu, be FULL quality and work nicely with Hub themes/movie sheets?
2.) I made it through 10 DVDs before i ran into my first problem. I’ve been using the same settings for all discs. I use fairmount and disk utility on a mac to Rip to ISO. I had ZERO problems until DVD number 10. Everything appeared to work fine, but when i went to test the iso on the hub, it would open and just display a black screen. I tried a few other programs and eventually used DVDfab to rip to folders (VIDEO_TS, etc.) then i used DVDshrink to package the folders as an ISO, which played, but seemed to be kinda low quality . . . not sure if it was just my imagination though. Any thoughts on why this 1 disk caused trouble? I noticed it did have one of those annoying computer autoplay features where it has computer based extras on the disk, might that have been the source of the trouble?
Nope… If you want ORIGINAL quality, WITH DVD Menus, then a full ISO backup is the only choice.
There can be any number of reasons; particularly with the advanced copy protection found on some disks. I’ve always used DVDFab and ripped straight to ISO. There’s no need to rip to VIDEO_TS and then convert THAT to ISO. Also, in DVDFAb, make sure you set the OUTPUT FORMAT to be DVD9. I think the default when I first installed it was DVD5, which will re-compress the DVD to about half its size, at the expense of quality.
The Hub will (usually) ignore any of the other junk; it’s just looking in the VIDEO_TS folder. It disregards things that are in the root folder or in AUDIO_TS.
I don’t have it in front of me, but I think right next to the SAVE AS location box at the top of the screen, there’s also a little silver disk-like icon right next to the folder icon. If you click that and follow the prompts, it will save as ISO.
Also to add with DVD fab you if you know what to look for you can do a custom this will give you several options like subtitles and audio I cut out the forieghn subtitles and foriegn audio and do not save any of the extras most Dvds run about 4 to 6 GB doing the custom.
The black screen you have is a known dvd menu problem with the hub the few that I have that do this I go into preview mode and it skips the menu and plays fine beyond that. you just have to let the movie start playing and scrol to the window pane it is playing in and hit enter and it will become the correct size on TV Patiently waiting for it to get fixed
Next to the “Target” dropdown box, you will see a folder icon and an icon with the silver-blue disc in it. Click on the disc icon and a window will pop up where you can change the save locaton for the ISO. Click “OK” and now in the “Target” dropdown box it should say something like "C:\your\location\moviename.iso.
You can also change the iso burn engine to use Nero or Imgburn. Click on the green circlle with a check mark in it at the top and the Options menu will open. Click on “Write” under “DVD / Blu-ray” on the left menu, then under “Burning Engine” select the ISO burning engine you want to use (you have to have Nero or ImgBurn installed to use these).
