Problem with DTS?

Hi.

I’m thinking of buying this unit, but it has come to my attention that a lot of people are experiencing issues with the sound out of sync, if playing a MKV file with DTS through optical → receiver.

Is this the case? Because playing mkv’s with DTS would be my main use…and why havent they fixed it?

I just plugged in my Live Plus via optical to my receiver.  The Plus is running the 1.04.17 firmware.

No sync issues with DTS from MKVs when streaming via Media Server from a MyBookLive NAS.  Looks and sounds great.  :)

I personally have never run into sound out of sync issues with MKV and DTS via optical.

I’m having sync issues with mp4, mpg2 and ts files. I have yet to get audio to work on my mkv files.

I dl some movies. Most of the DTS are supported. But how come those in HD DTS format are not supported. Please advice.

A quick search of the forums for DTS-HD gets a lot of results, this has been discussed at length.

Cliffs Notes:

  • The Live should play the DTS “core” of any DTS-HD MA file.  If it doesn’t, there’s probably something wrong with the audio track.
  • DTS have an outdated licensing structure that doesn’t recognise media streamers like the Live.  
  • DTS won’t give WD a DTS-HD streaming license because they say one doesn’t exist.
  • We point out all the other media streamers on the market capable of DTS-HD output.
  • WD marketing department doesn’t know its arse from its elbow, so we lose out because they can’t negotiate a license or find a loophole for the player when every other major media player maker has done.

Personally I have a NeoTV 550 by Netgear on back order with Amazon Canada -hopefully to replace my Live.

The early reviews look VERY promising; HD Audio passthrough, FULL BluRay menu support, Movie Wall support, Auto framerate detection, HD interface, passive cooling, rock solid network performance… Yes it cost more than my Live did -but not too much.

I checked out the NeoTV at Fry’s today. Unfortunately, it’s lack of support for Netflix and Blockbuster made it a no go. Sure has nice specs, but for $20 more than the NeoTV I ended up returning the WD TV Live Plus and getting the WD TV Live Hub. Using the DVDFab software (recommended to me in another thread) I made a conversion of Avatar in Blu-Ray with the DTS audio intact and it plays superbly from the network and from the built-in hard drive of the Live Hub. The Netflix compatibility is a bonus that means I will always have something to watch even if I don’t have a disc or downloaded movie on hand. On another note, I can;t believe how different the menu system is between the Live Plus and Live Hub. Night and day difference. The Live Hub looks polished and pleasing, the Live Plus looks like something from my C-PM compiling days.:smileyvery-happy:

If DTS-HD is something you absolutely must have, you should probably be looking at other players. Having said that, check the forums for other players first before jumping ship, I recall reading about playback issues with DTS-HD on some of them.

There is some slim hope it might be supported in future firmware updates someday… If HD audio is important to you, your best option is to research a different product. There are new media players on the market each month that DO support HD audio.

I wish I could just walk into a store and see this stuff in action “hands on”. -No Fry’s in Canada :cry:

We have “big box” electronics retailers, but they all sell the same stuff and definitely would never have something like the NeoTV 550 running as a demo…

The lack of Netflix or other on-line streaming services is not a deal breaker for me. The Netflix selection in Canada is garbage anyway and I get “good enough” HD Video On-Demand from my cable provider. 99% of my need is for DVD  / BluRay rips on my server and a large lossless audio library from all my CD’s…

Hi again guys,

I got my device a few days ago and so far I haven’t had any problems playing any kind of file, including *.mkv with DTS :slight_smile:

On the newest firmware :slight_smile:

Yes. It’s important to me. Also guess to a lot of us out here. Already gotten some cheapo china media player. Plus I’m getting e Boxee. Yes, e Boxee.
