Production/Manufacturing Problems at WD?

Does any one care to venture a guess what is the deal with the production or manufacturing of the RED NAS drives at Western Digital?

I go to the WD Store at least once a week. The RED drives in the 4TB and sometimes 5 and even 6TB are hardly ever in stock. What is even more anoying, if I sign up to get the email telling me they are back in stock, by the time I get the email they are already out again. Case in point, last email I got was at 8:30pm on a Monday night. I went to the store at 9pm, and it already said they were out of stock again.

I have since, gotten another email and just so happened I was on my computer at the time, I inmediately made it to the store and said there was 1 drive left. ONE!!!   And it was probably true, because I tried to buy 2 4TB and told me there weren’t enough, but it allowed me to buy the one. This was back in March 6, I keep calling the store for an update to my shipping since I have gotten nothing in the mail.  All they keep telling me is they are out of stock. What gives?

What is going on down there? Is it even worth trying anymore?

Hi Winchy,

We are not having any type of stock/production issues. Have you tried a different vendor to see if they have more stock? The WD Store usually keeps a lower inventory since it usually covers just single purchases, not any type of quantities. I included a link below to our “Where to Buy” since they may have larger quantities of drives.

Have you tried with other online retailers such as Amazon?

Yes, yes  I have guys. They do have plenty of drives. The problem is, every single one I have gotten has NASware 2.0.

That is  unacceptable in my book. The WD store is the only one that has supplied me with drives that have the new firmware. When I can get my hands on them off course.

LB_WD, you lost me there when you said there are no problems. Did you read my post in its entirety?

You don’t think that pathological scenario is a problem?

Also, I did not buy quantities. I purchased one, back on 3/6.  I am still waiting for it.

Here is a kicker…

Since WD can’t supply the RED 4TB to people that have ordered (one month and still waiting here).

What do they do? They jackup the price!!!

Price when I place the order a month ago:   $166.99

Today:  $184.99 !!!

Nice huh?

I hear you, Winchy.

I’ve been trying to get my hands on 2 of the 6TB reds myself. They have been out of stock forever. It is rather frustrating.

It’s rather funny to hear WD direct us to other stores where their profit will be less. Definitely sounds like either a stocking issue (not keeping enough drives around for themselves) or a manufacturing problem (not producing at the right scale).

I’d be glad to use another retailer, but I’m using my student discount, so I can’t go to amazon to get the same price. However, if it takes too much longer, I might just bite the extra cost and buy it elsewhere.
