Raid? NTFS? JBOD? What is best set up for My Book Live Duo?

I just recently bought my second My Book Live Duo with some hesitation because 1 drive failed in Raid/1 (I think. Was using mirror config) Once it failed I could not access the data on the 2nd drive and it cost me a week of recovery time to get back 960,000 files which I almost lost. I bought Model # WDBLWE0060JCH-NESN WD 6TB My Book Duo Desktop RAID External Hard Drive - USB 3.0. Ideally I would like NTFS storage on one drive and I’d like the 2nd drive to back up the first drive using NTFS so I can always access the info in case of failure. I used this system as a NAS and also to back up individual computers in the office. The recovery tech said he was not sure what language my previous unit had stored the info and thought it was linux. I don’t know anything about Linix and don’t want to put myself in the same position of data loss after going through this nightmare of almost losing all of my data. Any Suggestions? Incidentally my previous unit went to solid orange light and was no longer visible on the network.

Hi,

The best option would be RAID 1 since you want a copy of the data in the second drive, so if one the internal drives fails you can replace it and if the enclosure fails, you just need a replacement enclosure to insert the hard drives in the same order and the RAID 1 configuration will rebuild.
