Recover RAID5 Array from ShareSpace in a new EX4?

Today something happend with my ShareSpace NAS that served me well for five years. During a Client Image backup session, the ShareSpace suddenly rebooted, without finding the disk drives. All four disks are “FAILED” and the RAID Array is non-existing. Not so fun! Such things could happen if you are flooding the Storage, but I used less than 400 GB data before the backup started (2.2 TB availalbe in RAID5 mode). My Image to be backed up was a 35 GB win7 Image.

After contacting WD Support, it seems that since the unit is out of warranty, WDC offer no repair service. The mgt interface works and I could submit SysLog file to them and I still waiting for their analysis of the syslog. My suspicion is that there is a hardware problem in the RAID-controller. My hope is that there is only a hardware error in the unit and that the disks are still fine.

If I would buy a new EX4, would it be possible to slot in my old disks in the new frame and restore the data? Any other methods of restoring RAID5 data from four disks? I have seen similar inquiries but no answers!

Please help!

P.S.

I finding it remarkalbe that a company that offer critical products such as Data storage offer no repair service on a product that is 5 years old.

Hello,

As far as I know, WD does not have a repair center. If the unit stills under warranty, they will replace the unit for you.

Regarding adding the drive to a EX4, I’m not sure if that might work as the units are a bit different and the firmware on the units are not the same.

My recommendation on this case, is to look for another ShareSpace to see if you can get the data out of the drive or try to contact a data recovery company.

Thanks,

There are few units on the market and the risk that they do not work is obvious. My hope is that someone in this community had the experience of recovering data manually with a third party RAID controller or manually copying the disks to a healty PC and making software recovery?
