Recovering deleted files

I have my work laptop syncing with my WD My Cloud and creating a back up. My wife decided this was taking up too much space and deleted the back ups and the sync file. As a consequence (due to syncing) all of the files on my work laptop have now been deleted as well. The My Cloud is still full so my data must still be on there but after following severall sets of instructions nothing seems to work… Any ideas?

What program did you using to backup or sync files to the My Cloud? Have you tried using Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder to access the My Cloud and search for files you think were backed up?

Not sure. I just followed the My Cloud instructions. I’m using a PC with Windows 10 and have used File Explorer but nothing shows even when I connect via the USB connection

You cannot connect the My Cloud USB port to your PC and expect to view files on the My Cloud. The USB port is for external USB hard drives. The My Cloud should be connected to a network router using an Ethernet wire.

To backup or sync to the My Cloud you generally use software installed on the computer. What software program were you using? How were you backing up or syncing to the My Cloud? Were you using WD Sync or WD Smartware?

If you were using WD Sync or WD Smartware you can see each program’s help for more information on how to recover files.

I’ve followed the WD Sync instructions from the support site below but that asks you to drag and drop the file that is missing in order to recover the documents but the file is deleted on both the My Cloud and my PC so that doesn’t work. I have tried dragging my “Documents” folder but that only brings back a couple of items. I was trying the USB connection as a last resort but that didn’t yield anything. Ive also followed the WD SmartWare instructions but my “Retrieve Tab” is greyed out.

One option is to use Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder to search through each Share for the missing or deleted computer files on the My Cloud.

Depending on how you configured the backup or sync software it is possible not all files you thought were being backed up or synced where actually being backed up/synced.

How do I get access to the relevant share using File Explorer. WD SmartWare doesn’t give File Explorer access and neither does WD Sync…or at least I cant find out how to do it and using a USB cable gives me access to the drive but just shows a Video and a Photo folder.

The files I recovered were just one empty file and three documents. The device is full with more than 2TB of my data.

Have you read the My Cloud User Manual (https://support.wdc.com/product.aspx?ID=904) to learn how to use your device?

Open Windows File Explorer, a separate program that is part of the Windows Operating System, and navigate to Network then your My Cloud. For example type “file explorer” in the Windows Cortina search box to find the Windows File Explorer app/program on Windows.

One can “map” My Cloud Shares to their Windows PC to make access easier.

Apologies, I wasn’t clear. Yes, I have read most of the User Manual. I know how to access File Explorer and how to access WD My Cloud in the network section. My issue is that this does not give me access to any of my deleted files

You may want to contact WD Support directly (this is a user to user support forum) if you haven’t done so already to see if they can assist further in locating possible deleted laptop files on your My Cloud.
