Reformatting problem with My Book Duo and Mac OS Mojave

So I’ve done a silly!

I have a 2 x 1TB My Book Duo, used as a Time Machine Back-up in Raid 1 mode, formatted for mac. It is for my wife’s desktop with High Sierra. It stopped working, would mount, but just hung trying to back up. It was full - 998GB but wasn’t deleting older backups.

As there is nothing we needed to to save on the drives I thought I’d reformat it and start again. But it wouldn’t mount on my machine using Mojave. WD Drive Utilities didn’t work - I used an existing old version and downloaded two others, one current and one older. The older ones won’t connect to the server, the current one just says ‘Attach a supported drive’.

Using USB rather than firewire I got the drive to appear in Disk Utility, and then I made my big mistake. I selected erase. Which it did, but I forgot Disk Utility sees the drive as a single rather than raid, so it looks like one has been erased as there is 593gb free. Says 407gb used on disk2s2.

The drive shows in the finder. Correctly shows Backups.backupdb - then (computer name), but then an alias to latest. There is no visible data. As I said, data loss is not an issue, but I want to know how do reformat the drive. WD Drive Utilities is on furlough, or just not interested (!) and if I try erase again in Disk Utilities it fails (saying can’t unmount the drive) and hangs if I click on partition. The RAID Assistant doesn’t work either.

Any ideas please?
