Remote PC Access

I recently purchased and installed the 2 drive Sentinel for one of my clients. I’m still working on getting everything exactly the way I want it as far as folders and files, but I’m close. The one thing I’m kind of struggling with is the remote access. I’ve configured the modem as well as run the setup a domain using the .remotewebaccess.com address.  I can connect to to the server. I see all of my folders and such listed. I then see the list of computers and I see that they are available. I click connect. Everthing is good, I can log into the machine and do what I need to do. So I would say it is configured “correctly,” but what is bugging me. Occassionally you will get a message that it can’t find the computer and to make sure it is on the domain (I’m not using a domain). Sometimes if you wait 5 minutes or so, then you can connect to the PC just fine again. Other times it doesn’t come back at all until you restart (so far I’ve only restarted everything since I have to drive to the client site), but this isn’t good since most of the time when we need remote access, there won’t be anyone in the office.

Is there a setting or something that I’m missing? I’ve run all of the Microsoft and WD updates that it says are available.

A little more insight on this. Restarting the PC doesn’t help. No one was in the office and a user was 200 miles away and I had to drive to the office and restart it so they could what they needed to do.

I don’t have an answer to this, but I would suggest you purchase the Advanced Admin Console for WHS2011. This way you can do most PC tasks remotely. It’s free for 30 days.

I’ll install it on my DX4000 to see if I have issues.

Thank you very much. I tried to installed this add-in remotely, but it didn’t want to let me. Next time I’m on-site I will try to get it installed.

Right now, we are still “working” but with the times where we have to wait for the “timeout” or whatever is happening to let us in.

So give a description of the “client” site where the server is installed.

ipconfig /all from the server for starters

ipconfig /all from one of the clients

No other server on the network?  Nothing else using port 443?

You said you configured the modem?  What kind of broadband connection do you have?

Thank you for responding. I do consulting on the side, that is why I called this a client site. When I went into this office they had an old IBM 342 in a monster rack sitting in their front office that was on it last leg. This whole rack set up looked and sounded like **bleep** and didn’t provide them with what they needed and was too complicated for just 2 people. I jerked all of this ancient stuff out and replaced it with the WD Sentinel & new Zxyel Router & Zyxel Unmanaged Switch. I did away with the domain and just created a workgroup.

This is a small 2 person office. The main thing they use is Quickbooks. When they are out to a customer’s site, they need to be able to access the maintenance records for the equipment they service and give the customer up-to-date real time information.

They have cable for broadband internet access with a static IP address. I just installed a new Zyxel Router, replacing an old, home Linksys Router. The Zyxel is the DHCP server for the network, but when the Sentinel configured its IP address, it configured the router to reserve its IP address. The router is set for 192.168.1.1, with DHCP clients starting at 192.168.1.50. I have a couple HP printers not configured for DHCP and they are set at 192.168.1.10 & 11.

I’m not sure how to do an ipconfig /all on the Sentinel storage server.

I started to say I was unable to do an IPCONFIG because it wouldn’t let me in, but it just let me in.

No other server on the network. Nothing else is using port 443.

Sorry, when I said I configured the modem, I should have said router.

Hope this helps, if you need anything else, let me know.

One thing to add, I did have both the network cables connected to the Sentinel. Wanting to do an experiment, I’ve disconnected the second one wondering if somehow it and/or the router was getting 2 IP address or something. So far, it hasn’t helped.

This is a preety slick add-in that you should be able to instaqll from afar

I don’t see your pictures?  from a command prompt on each you can do

ipconfig /all >server.txt

ipcon fig /all >client.txt

This will put the output in the .txt files and you can copy and paste that.

I really would like to see a picture of the error you get, b ut if we cant post pics here I may ask you to emaqil it to mee if you get one.

The desktops at the office are not going to sleep are they?

When these workers go out in the field and connect back to the office, are they using the same laptop, or are they sitting at random PC’s at the various clients?

The ip’s for the server and clients in the office stay the same even though they do get them dhcp correct?

The 2nd network connection is there only if the 1st fails. You can not use both to increase bandwidth . Remember that because you connected that 2nd network card, if you disconnect it, you will always get an error message on the LCD. Look for a post here on how to do a registry hack to remove the warning. Or leave the 2nd connection in.

Thanks, I knew in theory what it was for, but was just making sure. I’ve seen similar issues before with things like this. Like I said, it was just a test. Next time I’m there, I will plug it back in.

OK, I’ll get you the txt files for the client machines. Currently, the customer is connected to them, so I can’t get in. I’m still not sure how to get to a command prompt on the server since everything is done through the dashboard.

I’ve tried to get a print screen of the error, but so far haven’t had luck. I will try to get the exact wording next time I get. Isn’t that the way it goes, when you want to get it, you can’t get it?

They are not going to sleep. In one instance within a 5 minute period, I was able to connect to the machine 4 times in a row, then the 5th time I got the error message. Waited a few minutes and then I could connect, so I don’t think going to sleep is an issue.

They are using their laptops. Most of the time they are coming from their house, but one is using a Verizon Mi-Fi. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I get the same message from my house using my desktop computer on my home LAN.

One thing I don’t think I’ve mentioned, I’ve gotten this same error message when I try to connect to the server itself remotely.

Gor giggles, from home, clcik start run (XP) or click the window and type (Win7) mstsc, press enter

Expand options and go to the advanced tab. At the bottom, connect from anywhere, settings.

Click use these RD Gateway settings and for servername put  whatever.remotewebaccess.com

On the general tab, for computer name put the servername

Click connect.  for every user password prompt use administrator and the admin password.  You should end up at the server full desktop.  Then you can install aweico and do the >.txt stuff

I was finally able to get a print screen. In case you can’t see it, here is the exact text: “Your computer can’t connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server address is unreachable or incorrect. Type a valid Remote Desktop Gateway server address.”

Thanks Gramps, I’ll try the gateway settings you just posted.

These desktops PC’s you are connecting to.  Do they have a 3rd party firewall?  (Other than windows firewall)

Any antivirus on the server?

Only Windows Firewall, no antivirus on the server.

Well the gist of my research shows if it works “sometimes” thing are probably properly configured

So now I am pondering MTU settings and or just how much did that router cost?  You might play with MTU settings in the router or just try another router.

This is the router: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833181161

I’ve always had good luck with Zyxel products, but nothing surprises me anymore.

No clue, looks like people buy it for the wireless though.  I have better ideas for that.  Look for a firmware update, check the MTU stuff, try a diff router.
