Replacing my trusty 3TB MyCloud Drive

This drive is still useful, except for the burnt blue led status light. I did change it to green.

However, it is really slow. I keep getting messages from WD that no more support.

What exactly does that mean? Does that mean I can not access the:
My Cloud OS3 End of Service | Western Digital!

to email tags to pictures, document, etc stored on the device.

On this drive I have about 300 GB of music, 200 GB of folders, and with time machine backups still have about 1.5 TB left.

I use it for music streaming my flac music files, no problems.

So why do I need to replace it?

And what product would I replace it with???

Certainly something that is faster, and better media support, like building playlists, etc.

What does not more support mean and why is their new OS so much better than OS3 on this device.

Comments?

OS3 v4. X single bay My Cloud cannot be updated to OS5 v5. X firmware. After WD terminates OS3 support in April one can still access their My Cloud on their local network.

Q: Will my device stop working if I can’t upgrade to My Cloud OS 5? Will I lose access to my data?
A: Once the services have been shut down, you will still be able to access the device on a local network. However, access through the My Cloud OS 3 mobile app or web app will not be possible. Email notifications also won’t be delivered. Devices that have auto-update enabled will receive a final firmware update to disable remote access and outbound traffic to cloud services. Then, support will end and you’ll have to use the local network to access the device.

Might be an idea to get a larger NAS which can handle more content

Why would I need more storage for more content. The 3TB MyCloud was perfect although it was really slow.

Is there a updated version of the MyCloud? Is My Home any better?

No the My Cloud Home is not better. If anything its a step down from the My Cloud line.

There are some things one can do if their My Cloud is sluggish. First step is to disable Remote Access/Cloud Access in the My Cloud Settings section if one does not use Remote Access. Disabling Twonky may also help if one isn’t using the My Cloud DLNA/Twonky media server.

There are further steps one can take using SSH to disable several services (wdmcserverd and wdphotodbmergerd) that tend to help with a sluggish My Cloud or a My Cloud that fails to enter sleep mode. One can search for past discussions on how to stop those services.

The 4 disk NAS is safer with tolerance of a disk failing

The issue is not 2 vs 4 disks. . .

The issue is the 1st gen hardware is fairly slow.

The other issue is the software . . . . . which has its issues

Unfortunately. . . . the other WD units are basically running the same cruppy software.
The “home” line is fundamentally worse.

To get better. . . well. . . .competitors. . .

For your stated purpose, there is no need to replace your MyCloud.
