I purchased my WD My Book Essential 2.0 around 2009. At the time, my laptop was running Windows Vista. That computer died on me, so I recently purchased a laptop running Windows 7. However, that doesn’t appear to be an operating system supported by this external drive version. Is there a way I can make it compatible with Windows 7? It took me forever to transfer the files from my dying laptop to this drive, and it breaks my heart that all of my pictures and music I took great pains to back up may be gone.
Hello, currently there is no compatibility update with Windows 7. To access your files, try connecting the My Book to a computer with one of the supported OS (Windows 2000, XP, Vista).
I don’t have an answer as to why it would not retrieve your files, but what I can tell you is that I have My Book Essential 2.0 as well and recently purchased a new PC with Windows 7 and it retrieved all of my files and pictures just fine. I had XP though on my old PC so not sure if that could make a difference of what OS system it was backed up from. I can say though that the external hard drive is compatible with Windows 7.
