ShareWare on Mac not seeing MyCloud drive

Hi all,

I have just installed a MyCloud 3TB in a home environment – Desktop PC (Windows 8.1, Ethernet), MacBook Pro (Mavericks, 16GB RAM, WiFi), iPhone 5 and iPad Air. All devices have the appropriate applications/apps and all can see the MyCloud and work as expected in terms of read/write/share. As I write this I am using TimeMachine on the MacBook to do a first backup (I know will take possibly days as only WiFi – I already backup my MacBook in other ways). I also have Parallels/Windows 7 on the MacBook and this also sees the MyCloud which I am very successfully using as a share point for Nvivo (a research management application).

My problem is that WD SmartWare on my MacBook will not even see the MyCloud drive – all I have is the MacBook icon in the top row under the tabs – the Backup and Retrieve tabs are greyed (obviously as there is no alternative drive found). On my PC, SmartWare works fine and shows the MyCloud drive and I can back up with it as expected. Also, oddly, when I open WD Learning Centre/Downloads on both machines, the available Download icons do not include ShareWare on the Mac but do on the PC – there are five icons on the Mac and six on the PC.

Am I missing something basic here? For instance, should ShareWare work on the Mac? Do I need to format the MyCloud to Fat32 just to make ShareWare see it on the Mac? Help or suggestions please! – this is the only thing holding me back to switching my method of working (University research) to using the MyCloud as a hub for data.

Many thanks, regards…Peter

Hi petergself, welcome to the WD Community. Smartware is not supported to work with My Cloud drives on Mac’s, I recommend to use Time Machine instead.

Thank you for the response - sorry for the delay in replying. Maybe the Mac application should be removed from the download area as I spent ages trying to get it to work and have now resorted to TimeMachine.
