Although I’ve had my MyClouds more than two years, I’ve only ever used it privately.
Today, I tried to send a private email link to a file. I selected the file in the Mobile app, and selected ‘share’ in the menu, selecting private link. A pop-up window appeared, saying ‘please add the storage drive to your MyCloud.com account’. It wouldn’t let me create a link.
Well, that’s odd, because I was sure the device was registered with my MyCloud.com account. I even checked it, by logging in to my account (for the first time!), and accessing the drive.
After a bit of playing with the non-mobile-friendly website, I managed to find the control to get it to show all files, rather than the default of pictures (huh? why would I want that default?), and eventually manage to ‘get link’ for the file. And sent it to the recipient. The ‘shares’ files’ view correctly shows it.
So, how can I make the mobile app let me do this? I am able to access the device from the mobile app, connected with the admin account.
Have you tried removing the My Cloud entry from the mobile app, then use the option within the mobile app to add a My Cloud by logging into the MyCloud.com account which should then populate the mobile app with all of the My Cloud’s associated with that MyCloud.com account.
That’s a good point; I’ve only ever connected the mobile app by logging in locally. Usual informative WD error message…
Deleted device. Went to add again. Only gave option to use local access, or passcode. Couldn’t find a means to log in with mycloud.com details. Turned off wifi and turned on mobile data; no change…
After logging in to mycloud.com, and looking around a bit, I went back to mycloud app, whereupon it suddenly decided to ask for my email and password for the mycloud.com login.
Provided those, went through the photo backup setting (AGAIN; why cant it remember…?), and can now create links.
Thanks, Bennor.
So, the questions for WD are;
why doesn’t local device association to a MyCloud provide all the functions?
It allows local access and remote access, and it knows who I am and what my user’s mycloud.com account is, so why can’t I make links unless I make the device connection by giving my mycloud.com details?
Why am I not offered that connection option if I try to connect locally?
Why are the implications of that not made clear?
Why is the error message so obtuse?
Just went to access my DLNA media server; it’s all gone to ratsh*t.
Went to Twonky control panel, to find the sharing settings have changed.
One of the changes was the addition of the exact file I shared above, and everything else removed, and replaced by one selection of ‘all media types’ in my root media share, I.e. losing my media type granularity.
So, I strongly suspect that either the MyCloud.com website, or the mobile app have messed with the settings of Twonky. For no good reason I can think of.
