Should i install firmware updates

Before buying my WD TV Live media player I had come across some articles/posts advising not to install certain (or any firmware updates).  I’d like to know to ask this community about this recommendation.  Sould i allow all upgrades?  Some or none?  If some…which ones?

Please advise…

I would recommend to upgrade to latest non-beta version. And only try the betas if you’ve got problems which seems to be fixed in one of the betas.

Beware when upgrading for the first time, as your device probably is delivered with a rather old version (1.0.something). This version has a problem when upgrading through the network (may end up bricked), so do the first upgrade with a USB stick or disk.

WD has resolved that.

On a brand new Live, the first online update found will fix the bricking issue that originally existed, then once that’s installed the latest stable will be found and installed.

What Cocovanna is correctly saying is that if you have an firmware older than 1.01.17 then you should download and install the next upgrade via a USB flash drive. Do not upgrade via the network as this may cause bricking. Version 1.01.17 fixed the internet upgrade manager and allows safe network updates.

I get what he’s saying.  But when the Live’s plugged in to the network it finds the 1.01.17 first and installs that.  It doesn’t tell you about 1.02.21 being available via network, until 1.01.17 is safely installed – or at least it didn’t for me.

In that case I would assume that  you should simply download the latest version 1.02.21 from the WD site and upgrade via a local USB drive (not via the network). As far as I am aware all firmwares include the previous updates.

This is great advice so far…do any of the updates remove any functionality?  I thought I read that also sometime ago.  So far…from what I read above, the best plan is to download the most recent update and install via USB.
