I’ve got the Gen1 MyCloud single drive or whatever. I can’t explain it but I feel like it runs much poorly than it did when I got it a few years ago. The app used to work but now it’s pretty much useless. Clearly, WD has abandoned it altogether so… what now? Is there some underground world of custom NAS firmware or something that I can get into to make this totally operational device actually useful? I’ve tinkered with custom firmware with routers and androids, so there’s that for experience but what are your suggestions?
Because I can’t bring myself to throw away a perfectly operational piece of tech. It makes no sense.
The first generation single bay My Cloud (v3.x/v4.x firmware) is end of support. Most apps used by the first gen MY Cloud are likewise end of support. The My Cloud will continue to function as a basic local network NAS with limited remote access capability (for now) despite not receiving any more updates.
One can use the forum search feature, magnifying glass icon upper right, to find a number of past and ongoing discussions on attempting to use alternate firmware on the first gen single bay My Cloud. Some have success, some don’t. One such past discussion:
It’s an older NAS. The hard drive may be badly fragmented and the firmware may need updating. My Gen 1 mycloud still works fine (as a server/storage/backup device).
