Sometimes I see my Network Storage and sometimes I do NOT with my N600

Hello

I have had my Western Digital N600 for about a week and I am confused by something that I can not solve.

Before I got my WD router I had a Belkin router that worked flawlessly for about 7 years and I still have this router, fully working.

I have a small home network of wired and wireless devices running Windows 7 and Android.  All these devices can access the internet and each other.  All my data is on a small 4Tb Network Storage Device that I have had for over a year and is shared to all my devices.  All my devices can see each other and share data between them.

All my problems revolve around seeing my NAS box on my PC (Windows 7).  Both devices are wired into my N600 router.

If my NAS box has been left alone for an hour or so then the disks power down to conserve energy.

And, if I boot up my PC while my NAS box has powered down its hard drives, then the PC will not show me the NAS box when I look for it in Windows Explorer.  However I can log into the NAS box over the internet and look at its contents.  Doing this allows the NAS box to start up the hard drives and spring to life.

If I wake up the NAS box after logging into it over the internet and then re-boot my PC, I can once again see my NAS box in Windows Explorer.

Even if the NAS box has its hard drives powered up or not all my wireless devices can see the NAS box and access it with my Belkin and Western Digital N600 routers.

Any ideas how I can see my NAS box on my PC while using my new N600 router even if the NAS box has powered its hard drives down?

I am trying my best to wade through the PDF guide but not having much luck.

Cheers

Try enabling Local Master Browser under LAN tab

Hello

I am sorry but I can’t find what you suggest in my LAN section of the router.

Hello

I found the tab and as suggested Enbled Local Master Browser.

I’ll see if this solves the issue.

Cheers

Its been a few days now, and the Local Master Browser hasn’t resolved the issue.

Sorry.

As a bit of added information to help some kind individual resolve this issue sometimes when I boot up my PC and select the network option I see the name of my PC and the name of my router.

And if I re-boot my PC and go back into the network section of Internet Explorer, I see the name of my PC and this time the name of my NAS device.

At no point do I ever see all three devices in the Network section of Internet Explorer.

Cheers

You may have the NAS and the router competing to be the Master Browser. I’ve also had bad experiences with windows caching the “computer” icons even though they were removed or changed.

Maybe you can try to set your Network Storage to a Static IP, either on the NAS or the Static DHCP option on the router and then from your computer Map a Network Drive to your NAS device.

Bump

Anybody know why my WD N600 keeps messing with my Network locations?

When I boot up my Windows 7 computer I see my Network Storage Device and I can access it.

However If I do not use or access the NAS box immediately, or if I use the NAS box and then do not go back into it after a few hours then the NAS location is removed from my Network Locations.  The Networked NAS location is replaced with the title “MYNETN600”.

If I want to access my Networked NAS device I have to re-boot my computer.

This is a pain in the proverbial.

Every other device on my network which includes Windows 7 and Android devices can see my NAS box at any time.

The only device I have a problem with is my main PC which is wired to the WD N600 router.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Hello

How would I set my NAS to a static IP address?

Hello

How would I set my NAS to a static IP address?

You can try the following.

Under Advanced Settings>LAN>Devic and Client Tables, copy the MAC Address and Device Name of your NAS from the DHCP client table.

Go down to the Manually Added Devices section, paste the MAC Address and Name of the NAS and then enter in an IP address (Example. 192.168.1.150). Make sure it’s an address not already used by another client.

Click Add and then Save. Reboot your NAS.

When your NAS reboots, it should come up with the IP address you assigned previously (Ex. 192.168.1.150).

From your Windows PC, you should be able to now open up Windows Explorer and type in \192.168.1.150 or whatever IP address you assigned and then right click on the folder that appears (may need to log in) and Map Network Drive. Hopefully that works.
