Streaming File Discrimination

I have seen this issue a little bit on the boards but have not seen a fix that will work for me, so here goes nothing.

My WDTV Live has stopped recognizing my 3 TB WD My Book (which is a  discussion for another time, think of a fox and I have tried it, including 3 replacement WDTV boxes).  I have now plugged it into my home desktop and am attempting to stream to the WDTV using Network Share or Media Server.

With Network Share I can not access the My Book at all.  So if you know a solution there feel free to comment.

So, I tried using Media Server on the WDTV and can access the drive but with file discrimination.  It will not recognize .mkv files at all.  I could convert the .mkv to .avi or something else but did I mention the hard drive is a 3 TB drive that is almost filled with movies, of which about half are .mkv.

So, why will the media server option on the WDTV not stream .mkv files?

  1.  Make sure the drive is actually shared.

Open a CMD window on the PC on which the My Book is installed and issue the command

net view (ip address of your PC.)

Make sure your drive is in the list.

  1.  Because Windows doesn’t support MKV natively.   You’ll need to install a codec add-on for WMP for that to work.

“You’ll need to install a codec add-on for WMP for that to work.”

Watching the files on the desktop is not a problem and I have a codec that allows me to do that on the desktop through WMP.  The problem is in streaming to the WDTV Live.  When I use media server, which is the only way to see the external drive, it does not show the .mkv files when I try to stream to my TV.

The drive is shared, otherwise I would not be able to see it when I use the media server option, which I can.  The only time I cannot see it is when I use the Network Share/Windows Share option.

that’s because the server is not sending the mkv files

maybe this is over simplified but

a media server gives info to the WD

the WD can not display info/files it is not given

edit: maybe you should try a better media server, I personal like serviio

That’s not correct.   “Sharing” versus “Media Server” are two totally different things.

Try Plex or TVersity media server. There are many others. These are my 2 favorites. Plex is excellent and free, but maybe too customizable. You can waste a lot of time tweaking Plex. Tversity is killer in terms of ease of use, it’s automatic, but it’s not free anymore. The last free version is probably still floating around on the web somewhere. I have the free version and it still works great.
