Streaming from MyCloud to Fire Stick at a different location

I have a MyCloud EX2Ultra . Plugged into it is a hard drive which I can access through the MyCloud mobile app and web browser…

At a different house I have an Amazon fire stick plugged into a non-smart tv with VLC and Kodi installed.

Is there a way I can watch videos through vlc or kodi on the fire stick at the other house? or using any other app?

PLEX would be ideal for this application.

Be aware the EX2 Ultra does not have the horsepower to transcode on the fly - - but if you stream in native file resolution - - > you should be fine.

But with Plex, I would have to keep my PC on?

I guess its not possible to install mycloud OS5 app on fire stick?

Plex server would run on the WD NAS.

Last I saw (it was a while ago), it was an package you could install on the WD NAS device. Check both WD and PLEX websites.

Plex client would run on the firestick. You should be able to download it from whereever you download firestick apps.

The PC would not be involved in any way, except to provide a GUI browser interface for the Plex Server if you need to change settings or whatnot.

(You can run plex server on your PC and point the library files to a location on the NAS, but in that case Plex is running on the PC and the PC would stay on).

I have downloaded Plex, and plex surver software on my pc. I have also enabled plex on the mycloud dashboard, it downloads a bin file for my drive when im on the pc but i have no idea how to connect or add the media files on plex?

Any step by step introduction plz?

Perhaps do a little research on what you have and what you are trying to do and ask if it is practical.

The My Cloud EX2 Ultra, along with every other My Cloud are heading toward End of Life and End of Support in 2 years. Four other My Cloud models had already seen EOL in 2022.

I have not run plex in a while - - -but when I did; it has no issues at all running on a WD EX2 Ultra.

I had a server package on the EX2, and a server on the PC. Both servers used the “Library” of files on the EX2. In terms of performance, it was just fine as long as I didn’t transcode on the fly. In other words, I converted video files to the final format I expected to watch. (Essentially, 2K material for my TV’s - - → Didn’t have any 4K TV’s at the time).

The only issue I had related to access across the internet; where I demonstrated that my 5mb upload speed from the ISP was inadequate for any sort of hi-res streaming. This was not an EX2 bottleneck, but rather an internet provider bottleneck. My ISP has since upgraded to 10mb upload speed - - but I have not tested PLEX since that time.

If I was starting today, I would not use an EX2 ultra. I would get something with more horsepower for plex. HOWEVER. . . for today, I no longer feel the need to stream from a home server. Streaming services have broad reach (india and UK seem to work); long haul aircraft tend to have good video options, and a 1TB portable SSD drive is pretty cheap. . .I often just plug in a drive and use a PC directly with a video player like VLC.

How did u set this up on plex? How did u get the server package on the EX2 ? and the pc?

For setup, read instructions on the Plex website.
I have not done this for a few years, so I can’t easily tell you without. . . . wait for it. . . .reading instructions on the plex website.
