The physical DVD

Presuming we are all mostly on this forum because we stream movies and other media to our tv’s - it begs the question - what do most of you do when it comes to watching new releases? Personally I subscribe to Netflix DVD service - I would love to be able to download the movies (not on torrent as I do not believe in stealing) - however I cannot find any providers that allow you to download movies to your pc or hdd and subsequently stream it to your television. I know you can stream recent titles from amazon but again if I purchase I would not be able to store that movie on my WD book live - id like to have all of the media in one place…

Go buy the new release, then use THIS (or something similar).

I have no problem doing that - but it would be nice to get rid of the PHYSICAL DVD

Have you tried VUDU, you can purchase some new releases from there.

I have not tried vudu - digital copies can be purchased and downloaded from several providers but again they do not let you store it in an hdd. What I do now is buy physical DVDs and back them up using Mac DVD ripper - I then store them on my WD and can stream them to all of my devices - I guess I have no problem continuing doing this - but it would be nice to not have to keep piling up DVDs in the basement …

Well, the problem is that even if you could download videos to your HDD, you wouldn’t necessarily be able to play them on you SMP.  I have several TV shows that I have downloaded from Amazon Unbox, but they do not play on my player due to DRM protection.

So even if you were able to find a place that you could legally download video content, you may not be able to use it, at least not with out transcoding it and streaming it.

I guess I can understand why major studios are not crazy about downloading movies and storing them on HDD. However times are changing drastically. There’s got to be a way for them to allow a download and the purchasing customer has the ability to share the film ONCE and store in on and hdd that would allow streaming. Of course there will be some hackers that will find a way around this - but it’s better than the alternative I suppose - which would be for everyone to join BitTorrent …
