Thinking of buying one, have a few questions

Hello,

I am thinking of buying one of these, but not sure it will work well in my situation, wanted to get some advice.

My main question is, since this cannot be connected via USB 3.0 for direct transfer, what are the transfer rates like?  My home network is completely wireless, I suppose I could connect the laptop directly via ethernet cable if it was far faster though.  So what can I expect to see speed wise over Wifi compared to direct ethernet wired connection?

The laptop and router are Wireless-N, its a pretty new HP Core i5 with 6gb ram.

Finally, the main reason I want this is for DLNA, I have a ton of movies on my current hard drive that I am just plugging into my PS3 to play on the TV, but it would be nice to just stream them over DLNA.  Does this work fairly efficiently with this device?

I doubt I will ever need any more than 2-3TB space, and will likely not need to expand the storage, would I be better off just getting a My Book Live?  Or are there any other solutions that offer direct USB 3.0 connection and can also hook to the network router for DLNA (router is not DLNA)?  Router also does NOT have a usb port.

Thanks

Not sure if this will answer your question, but it might help.

I wanted to get a 1.8Gb file from a USB 2.0 pen stick. I plugged it directly into the My Cloud USB port. I then went to transfer it via my iMac which is connected to the My Cloud/Sky router via wi-fi. It estimated a 2 hr transfer time, so after about 4 or 5 mins, with the transfer time not really coming down and only about 60 Mb copied, I gave up and quit the transfer.

I then plugged the USB stick into my laptop and connected the laptop via ethernet 10/100 to my router and tried it that way. It transferred the file in around 4 mins!

Don’t know if I’m doing something wrong, but it seems painfully slow. I’ve previously tried transferring files from a portable HDD with USB 3.0 and it didn’t make much difference when I plugged that directly into the USB port of the My Cloud.

I’m a tad disappointed as I was hoping that the addition of a USB port on the My Cloud (I had a MyBook Live NAS previously) would mean that I could get files off a USB stick without having to fire up the Mac or PC. I was hoping to use an iPad or Galaxy S3 to act as the interface. Otherwise, the only practical advantage of the port is for storage expansion.

Update: i did some more testing and it would appear that the speed issue occurs when using my mac to transfer the file. When I just transferred a file from a usb 2.0 stick in the My Cloud using my phone, it went across quite quickly.
