Thumbnail help for a Newbie

Hi - I just got a hub, and transferred my DVDs to it.  Problem is, after doing “Get Info”, I see the backdrops, but not the thumbnails.  Instead, it just shows the generic movie camera image.

An example of my file structure is:

DVD

-Kids

–Cars

—AUDIO_TS

—VIDEO_TS

The Cars folder also contains three other folders/files:

.Cars.backdrop

Cars.metathumb

Cars.xml

I’m on the latest firmware version…3.01.19, or something like that.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If you created yur own thumbnails before you got content info you have to delete the metathumb That file will override the jpg for the thumbs. Then it is important that you power the unit down and restrt it after this to get the thumb back up

I didn’t create my own thumbnails.  Just looking for the simplest way to get this thing to look good.  :)  I thought the “Get Content Info” would pull in the thumbs as well.

I also noticed that in the .wd_tv->thumb->DVD->Kids folder, there are three files for one movie.  Is this folder supposed to contain thumbs for all the movies?  If so, any idea how I get them there automatically?  I really don’t want to create these things individually.

Oh, and thanks for the fast response!

So after reading some other threads, looks like I have to put the thumbnail in the VIDEO_TS folder.  Does that sound right?

I might try using an .ISO file to make things easier.

I know for a fact and ISO file with the movie name jpg will work or even the metathumb

and if you put the metathumb inide the video ts folder you may have to rename it from movie name to foldermetathumb

I tried out an ISO, and it worked!  But here’s a question, what’s the metathumb file do?  Also, do you have to have a custom theme in order for movie sheets to display?

Metathumb is your thumbnail. Yes you have to have a theme that is made for moviesheets

I have a moviename.metathumb file in the root of the folder. I have the same files structure as above.

 Movie name

    Audio_TS

    Video_TS

I also have a moviename.xml file as well. I have the same issue as above. I get just a generic movie camera icon and not other info after I do a get content info.

Is there a better format to rip the DVD into other than listed above? I use Clone DVD and ANYDVD. Any better software?

Clone DVD and ANYDVD are some of the best software I have ever used. Here is another option to add to your system: you couild download their Virtual Clonedrive which let’s you mount the .iso file on a virtual drive on your computer, then you can use a software such as winx dvd ripper to convert to .avi or .mp4 or any format of your choosing depending on the converter software you use. The reason I have always done the pre-conversion to the.iso is because it takes Clone DVD bout 5-10 mins to convert when it takes the software way too much time to read the dvd & save the info prior to the conversion. You can create some great rips with a lot less space needed for storage, and you don’t need to have the files in their own folders this way. Also, with my .avi, .mkv or .mp4 files I let the WD create the thumbnails now for my movies & use WDhubgen for TV…

I guess this newbie still doesn’t get how to make the thumbnails appear.

I made a new video folder named “my video”. Inside the folder are the video_ts and audio_ts files.  I copied the .jpeg picture I want to use for my thumbnail and pasted it into the root of the “my video” folder.

I named the .jpeg “folder”…didn’t work.

I named the .jpeg “my video”…didn’t work.

Then I copied and pasted the same combination of .jpeg names into the video_ts folder…didn’t work.

Then I copied and pasted the same combination of .jpeg names into the video root directory…didn’t work.

What am I doing wrong?

Jerry

Are you using CloneDVD?

I am. Just wanted to see if tehre is a beter format for this. ISO vs TS files???

I was actually asking Jerry who seems to still be having issues.

I create .iso, then I use it to create .avi file. My files are usually just over 1gb with ac3 sound…

What do you use to create the avi from ISO?

I use WinX DVD Ripper, I got the license free through one of those daily giveaways, but there are other software freeware on the net. You just have to take the time to get it right for your needs. I got the virtual clone drive from Slysoft, same download page as the anydvd & clonedvd, and it is free. You can then rightclick the .iso & mount it on one of the virtual clone drives virtual drives. It makes it just like you inserted the actual dvd in a dvd drive, but the info is already on the computer; this means the converter doesn’t have to scan the dvd 1st for the data which takes the most time in my experience. Once the .iso is mounted, open your software, then open the mounted .iso with your software & convert to the format of your choosing depending on your software. I really do like WinX Ripper cause it’s easy for me, but it’s really the only software I have used. Good luck. It took me a good amount of time to get my collection converted, it became a hobby, lol
