Transfer files via FTP from EX2 to the EX2 Ultra and now they are read only

I bought the new ex2 Ultra as an upgrade for my EX2. I have about 2TB of files that I needed to transfer to the new drive. I was dragging them over but read that I could do an FTP transfer between the 2 drives. I enabled FTP on both devices and started to let it transfer some of the folders. When I went to open and verify the transfer the files are read only and I can not make any changes, delete them or anything. What have done to myself here? I check the security and the owner of the folders/ files is Unix user/root. I’m using Windows 11.

Help, I just bought the EX2 Ultra as the upgrade for the OS5 since the EX2 is no longer supported.

  1. I use the USB backup app to temp store and re-load on an External USB disk
  2. I also have had both NAS units on a home network and used windows 7 and later 10 to move files.

someone else may now a quick ownership fix

I had this exact issue today also. And…CORDORB answer makes no sense.

I have a 16TB EX2 and I bought a 2nd one. I set the 2nds one to FTP the files from the 1st one and it works great. But you cannot delete or edit the files because they become read only. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks for replying. My bigger concern is how to “recover” from having 100’s of files that are now read only on the ex2 ultra drive. I wish WD would provide best practice instructions for transferring data to a new drive from a drive they are cancelling support. I couldn’t find anything and I’m still looking for help with that in addition to fixing my current read only problem.

I think the problem is WD does not know the answer. I have tried everything to back up on ex2 to another and have problems. I even see people asking questions for the same issues I am having with no answer. I will put in a support ticket and see what happens.

Thanks, I submitted a ticket last Thursday and resubmitted for a response again on Saturday. I assume they are closed for the holidays.
I’m still trying to find an answer but maybe they will respond to you.
Thanks

WD support responded and provided me with the instructions. Here is the link they gave me. I had to make sure that using SSH didn’t void my warranty. WD assured me it did not.

I had to install PuTTy and enable SSH.

Once you have PuTTy installed when you do the CD command use the CD for firmware 2.xx.xxx even though I have firmware 5.

Everything else work as designed.
