Transferring files

Hi, I have a My Cloud 2TB. I want to upgrade to MY CLOUD EXPERT SERIES EX2 ULTRA (4TB). But I want all my old files in my current MyCloud 2TB to be in the new Expert Series one.

Is there any alternative apart from having both plugged in at the same time with a PC being the middle man copying the files? My MyCloud drive is 88% full and it will take probably days for all files to be fully transferred (without any corruption).

While there are other methods, reliability should be a priority when migrating data. As such, the best method is a direct file transfer between both devices.

the fastest way is to invest in a drive duplicator such as this:

if you are brave enough to take out the drive

Thanks for the response, but how do I do that?

I’ve taken out drives before…just not from a WD My Cloud system…

That looks like a good idea, but the thing is I’ll only most likely perform this once, so spending £32 on something that I’ll use once is…

Surely there must be another way…

Hi,

plenty of guides here.

Youtube has a lot of guides: Youtube_Guide
Or you could use rsync to copy directly between 2 devices connect to network HOWTO - Using rsync to move a mountain of data - Linux.com

this requires you ssh to both drives.

True, you probably need duplicator only once.
Or use a machine in the middle to copy.

there is no magic bullet, yo will have to wait while things copied over.

Hold on, is it possible to just swap the hard drives? All I want is my old files in the new EX2. I just don’t know if that’s possible at the moment. prays that it is

Just to let you know, I changed my mind and got a QNAP NAS. After hearing about the vulnerabilities in WD’s software, I decided to move away. Still love your hard drives though.
