TrueCrypt on My Passport 2TB and USB 2.0?

Hi WD Community,

I have a Lenovo U330 laptop (2009) with 2 USB 2.0 ports. I often use my old 1TB my passport (usb 3.0 also) as whole disk TrueCrypt volume without any problem. Recently I bought a new 2TB model, try to set it up the same way, but having problem with the drive constantly ticking sound when copy file onto it, even at relative low ~20MB/s due to usb 2.0 port. This is a 2nd drive that I tried it on, first time I thought it was defective, return and rebuy. Tried delete drive/partition, reformat… still the same. Remove TrueCrypt, it seems to run better with WD security encryption, though still occasional ticking maybe like 2 or 3 tick in 5 min or so.

I would like to ask if any one here know why the drive behave like that. Is it possibly my laptop usb port is underpowered? (but the 1TB drive run perfect).

Appreciate any help!

Btw, I read this from a top post in “WD Portable Drives” board:

"Now let us look in to 2.5in hard disk drives. Drives built many years back draws over 500mA current and are unable to spin-up on modern PC’s. So you’ll hear ticking sound inside the drive. If the drive is ticking, disconnect it immediately or you’ll end up with a physically damaged hard drive. These drives needs an external power adapter capable of delivering 1A (1000mA) or more. So you need a new USB drive enclosure with external AC power adaptor, loosing portability.

Newer drives are capable of running under 500mA power drain but most of them needs 460mA or 480mA of current. Technically these newer drives fit for USB only power source. But some PC’s are unable to provide adequate power to the drive due to above mentioned fuse tolerance. Fuse may be disconnecting intermittently for a brief period causing drive/file system errors. Drive tends to drain peek power while writing larger files for longer period. Writing smaller files in to disk drive may not exhibit this issue."

Hello, it is possible that the laptop is not providing enough energy for the Passport to work correctly. If possible try connecting the Passport to a desktop computer to verify if the same problem keeps happening. If you notice that the Passport is working fine, you can call/email tech support directly to request a power booter cable.

First of, thanks for your suggestion.

I have tried on another Dell laptop with USB 3.0 port but problem persist. Also tested on desktop PC but the case is too loud, can’t really tell for sure but it seems to be ok.

Therefore I contact WD support asking for a booster cable. Hopefully they’ll give me one.

Thanks!
