Trying to Backup External Hard Drive (using MacBook Pro)

I just got the MyCloud Mirror 8TB (2nd Gen) on a MacBook Pro. I am trying to backup a hard drive. I didn’t realize that I should have used the drive’s IP address and the dashboard to back-up from USB to NAS. What I did (unsuccessfully) was to use the Mac WD MyCloud app to transfer the folder with all my subfolders of family photos from my external hard drive into the Public share folder. It took several hours and then stopped with an error. I tried it again and it copied with errors again. What I didn’t know was that it wasn’t copying my photos but “moving” them from the external hard drive to the Public share folder.

Now I’m trying to move them back from the MyCloud Mirror Public folder to my external harddrive but I can’t select multiple folders to move. And if there is already an existing folder on the external drive, the MyCloud app does not let me move the file. So I have to move each folder one by one and each folder takes 10 minutes or so to move several thousand MBs. The external hard drive is connected by usb to the back to the MyCloud.

My question is this - is there a faster way to move files out from the MyCloud back to my external hard drive? I am trying to avoid losing any photo files. I don’t want to go folder by folder and then checking each one to make sure they didn’t miss any files. It would take weeks to do it this way.

Also, what is the best way to back up an external hard drive onto the MyCloud? Is it through the dashboard backup?

Also, is there a way to designate folders on an external hard drive for automatic updating to the MyCloud just like on my computer laptop?

Thanks ahead of time for the time and help!

Hello,

I would recommend that you create a USB Backup (NAS to USB) from the My Cloud dashboard. Take a look at the article below:

Thank you, G_Rayn. I just bought another 4tb HD just for that purpose. I may end up returning the MyCloud Mirror. My MacBook doesn’t have a Gigabit network card and the transfers are mind-numbingly slow.

I appreciate your response and help!
