Unable to access Passport even though it is recognized

I’ve been trying to figure out an issue with a 1tb Passport Essential SE wdbacx0010bsl-00 from around 2011.

The drive shows not as Passport but ‘local drive G:’ in windows 10. It shows up in the bios, it showed up in WD data lifeguard diag as passport and had a green checkmark by smart status Pass. However, I am never able to access the drive. When it’s plugged in windows explorer will just show the green progress bar indefinitely at the top, WD diagnostic will freeze up if I try to access, explorer freezes when I try to access, chkdsk on that volume just does nothing and shows not result, repair-volume through powershell does nothing and shows no result or progress. Disk management shows completely blank and says ‘connecting to virtual disk service’ at the bottom. If i click in a window that is trying to access the drive it will freeze up. If i mess with it too much I’ll get a green screen. Once the drive is disconnected the green screen disappears, everything unfreezes and goes back to normal. Tried different usb ports, different computer, different cable, upside down, standing on it’s side, cracked the desk with it a few times. Just kidding on that last one.

It has some very important data on it so I’d be willing to try whatever I need to. The only other ideas i have left are paying an expensive recovery service or attempting to swap out the platters if i can crack it open, if that’s even possible. We do have another Passport that is good, exactly the same model and size.

Hello,

Based on the information you have provided I believe this drive is defective. If you wish to recover your data I recommend you contact a data recovery company.

I contacted one of the recommended recovery service companies, and they gave me a quote starting at $700 up to $1,500! I am a recent Federal retiree, and certainly cannot afford this! Are their no other options?
