When I try to backup my computer to MyBook Live, I get the message that access was denied, Error # 0x80070005. I have no problem setting up the backup tp \MYBOOKLIVE\Backups with the correct user name & password. I have no problem accessing MyBook Live but Windows 7 can’t gain access. Can someone from the community help me to obtain access?
Are you trying to back up to a private share?
Do you have the MBL mapped in “My Computer”?
If you have Public mapped (using the defaults) then you might not be able to connect to a private share. I have had that problem before.
Thanks for your reply. I have the “Public” & “Backup” shares mapped to “My Computer.” The MBL shows up under “Network” with only the “Public” share available. The “Backup” share is set for “public” access. I disconnected the mapped “Public” share and tried to backup but got the same result. I still can’t get access to the “Backup” share.
Can you try accessing the share by clicking the Windows Start Button, then in the text box on the start menu type [\mybooklive\backup](file://mybooklive/backup) . That should let you get to the folder, or error.
WD doesn’t document it, but I’m pretty sure the name “BACKUP” is not allowed for a share, even though the WD doesn’t warn you when you try it.
Try changing the name of the share to “MYBACKUP” or something else.
Thanks for your replies.
Tried to access MBL with \mybooklive\backups and was successful. Tried again with Windows 7 Backup and it failed with Access Denied as before.
Also tried renaming the share to MyBackups as you suggested in your second reply. The results were the same.
Thanks for your reply.
I changed the share name to MyBackups and tried to use Windows 7 backup. The result was the same - Access denied.
I have no problem accessing MBL and its’ shares from Wndows Explorer. The network address, user name & password used to setup Windows 7 backup are correct but access is denied to Windows 7 backup.
Sorry - In my last reply I attributed the suggestion to change the share name to you. The suggestion came from TonyPh12345. I’ve replied to him that it didn’t help. I have no problem connecting through Windows Explorer but access is denied to Windows 7 backup even though te network address, user name & password are correct.
What version of Windows do you have?
As far as I know, only Win7 PRO will allow you to backup to Network devices.
Windows 7 Ultimate / Home will not.
Along with the other poster. Windows 7’s backup utility won’t back up to network drives unless it’s Windows 7 Professional. Are you using the WD Smartware backup program or the bundled Windows 7 utility? It sounds like you’re using the bundled version.
Yes, you can back up to network devices with W7 Home, by using VHD’s and things like that. However, it doesn’t work on the MBL because it doesn’t seem to handle sparse files the way Windows likes. Currently, I am backing up to a network share managed by OSX Snow Leopard and it works fine.
I am using Win 7 PRO.
I am using Win 7 PRO and its backup utility.
