Unable to upgrade to latest Firmware and slow performance

Hi,

I’ve had my WD MyBook 2TB (White Light) NAS drive for some time and had essentially stopped using it due to the poor speed performance when copying large files.  I was getting circa 600KB/s as a write speed from my Windows 7 machine.

However, I was convinced to give it another try and disable options etc. to improve speed.

I’ve made some progress by disabling Twonky server and Mionet and can now get transfer speeds of up to 2MB/s  - still someway off what I’m supposed to see (I’d heard of 18-30MB/s).

However, I now want to upgrade the firmware and I’m not having any luck.  I’ve tried both the automatic upgrade and manual upgrade from the web server, but neither work.  The browser waits for the page and eventually returns a blank white page.  When I check the status via the web console it still reports the following:

01.01.18 with MioNet 4.3.1.7
built on Wed Dec 2 15:55:04 CST 2009

I’d really appreciate any advice on how to get the upgrade working - is it possible via SSH (as I’m now comfortable running commands via PUTTY for this).

Also, any other thoughts on how to boost performance would be appreciated.  I have already completed a factory restore and wiped the entire drive before progressing these recent changes / speed improvements.

Many Thanks,

Branty

This low transfer rate will not be fixed by applying a firmware update, and also you cannot even updated.  I think that those are signs that your drive is failing, you may contact WD for a replacement.

Thank you for the response.  After more investigation I think there is a problem with the disk.

I have connected a USB drive to the MBWE drive and can get write speeds of circa 5MB/s to this.

Is there a tool I can run to check and fix disk errors on the NAS drive?

Thanks,

Branty
