Unhandled error code when making trafic on USB connected WD drive

Hi,

i have a single bay 4TB MyCloud.
I have also a 500GB, a 1TB and a 3TB MyBook.
I connected them to the MyCloud.
Now i wanted to save my data with a backup job.
I recognized that this was aborted after different times.
I have this behaviour with all 3 USB Drives.

I checked all the drives. They seem to be ok.

On ssh with dmesg -w i checked what is happening and found that there seems to be a problem. I would believe in a driver or USB port problem.

Because when i check the dmesg log i can find massages like:
end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 4094646368

But after reset of USB and connecting the drive a:
hdparm --read-sector 4094646368 /dev/sdg works well.
So the I/O error was not produced by the drive.

I am now copying the data by connecting the drive to a PC and copying over network.

But i think the Hardware and Software of the MyCloud should be able to read mass data from USB Drives without resetting the connection randomly.

I tried this with 3 different MyBooks on the USB, with a USB2.0 hub and a USB 3.0 Hub connected and without HUB.
Always the same behavior.

Using the way by connecting the drive on a PC it is working well, but i want to use the backup functionality of the MyCloud drive.

I have bought my MyCloud in the WD Recertified Shop. Is it possible that it is defect?

What can i do to get this problem solved? Any idea?

Here is a dmesg log from the error:

Ok,

now when trying to transfer from a Liux PC to MyCloud drive vie Gigabit Ethernet i get on the linux PC a abortion because of:
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(393) [receiver=3.1.2]

And in the dmseg of the pc a lot of:

Also speed is not so good, i have gigabit LAN and USB3.0 at the pc and get perhaps 50MB/s.

Bit speed does not matter but i should be able to copy mass data to the drive without getting abortions.

I hope someone can help me…

Best regards,
Stefan

Couple of comments and a suggestion or two. First is to try resetting the My Cloud with a 40 second reset. Just to rule out any flaky issues with the firmware. See the following for how to perform a reset:

https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=13986

Check the hard drives on a computer, run a scan of them to ensure there are no bad sectors or other issues. If using Windows one might have to use the command line (CMD) to run a full chkdsk on the drives. This will rule out any potential corruption of the drives.

As many past discussions have indicated the single bay My Cloud units sometimes have trouble properly reading and even mounting certain USB drives. Many have found that this typically stems from how the USB drive was partitioned and formatted. The My Cloud apparently tries to mount the first partition it finds on the USB drive. If there are multiple partitions the My Cloud may fail to properly mount the drive. The workaround some have used is to remove all partitions on the USB drive, then create a single NTFS partition. Down side is one will have to remove/copy off any data from the drive as repartitioning and reformatting will typically result in loss of data on the drive.

Hi,

thanks for your answer.
Reset does not help.

But i have searched further and found some issues kernel releated. As i checked Kernel i found that it is 3.10.39.

This was released: 30.06.2013

I am not wondering that USB 3.0 and also Gigabit Lan is not working well.
I really hope that WD will update this. i think we will benefit from a lot of improvements since 2013

The gigabit ethernet generally works pretty well, giving reasonable transfer speeds (measured with CrystalDiskMark).

The USB interface is much worse, IME.

Don’t hold your breath. WD have shown little inclination to track developments in the Linux on which their product is based.
