Uninstalling SmartWare on my Mac

I deleted the Smartware icon from my Mac’s Applications folder, believing that would suffice to uninstall the program. I noticed later that the instructions that came with the WD drive suggest a different, more complex procedure for uninstall. What I find new is that every 10 or so minutes I get a message on my screen saying that "The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk … ". I suspect  the frequency of the message reflects the settings in place on Smartware to backup my hard drive, but I’m uncertain. Is this annoying message likely due to an incomplete uninstall of SmartWare? How can I remedy this, presuming it is?

The two are likley unrelated… I would reinstall Smartware on your system, then uninstall correctly.  If the drive still shows as being unsafely ejected try a different USB cable or different USB port on your computer (or both?)

I no longer have ready access to that drive, as it is stored in my safe-deposit box. Can I download the program?

You can download the software from the following page: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/index.asp

Once you select your product, please proceed to step 2 (bypassing the firmware update).

I downloaded the program, installed it, then deleted it as the manual directs. I still have this condition. BTW, I’m not getting this message in response to any removal of a back-up medium. It just recurs without any obvious prompting, every 12 or so minutes.

That could be an indication that one of the files was not uninstalled, and is still running in your resources.
