Basically, I bought a 6T WD Red drive for use in a QNAP NAS that I bought to serve as my Plex server. Well, the QNAP is not up to my needs given the limitations imposed by the limited CPU power. I only discovered that flaw after I bought it unfortunately. So, I was thinking of building a dedicated PC to act as my Plex media center. Since I will likely run Windows 10 on the media server, or maybe something in Linux (no real experience, just curious), I was wondering if the Red hard drives would work in what would essentially be a very vanilla desktop set up. Given its purpose, it will have a LOT of CPU power, but everything else will be vanilla/mid-tier.
I bought the WD Red, as everywhere I looked, this was the recommended drive for a NAS. But, I was wondering if I could used in my new system? I would purchase another WD Red drive (if it will work here) upon which I will copy my current movie stash. I would then like to wipe the original NAS WD Red drive and use it in the new system to mirror the first drive. Sorry if my questions are vague or rambling, but my days of keeping up with computer technology are essentially behind me, and I don’t have the time to bring myself up to speed.
So, my question is whether a WD Red drive (this current one and any others I may buy) would work in a vanilla media center PC? Given the purposes for which it will be used (including being always on), do I lose anything/gain anything by going with the Red drives over another flavor drive?
