VelociRaptor doesnt show up during Windows Server 2012 R2 Install

Hi All,

Hoping someone can help with a little problem I am having.

I’ve been tasked to rebuild a “server” currently running Win Server 2008 R2 with Win 2012 R2. When I boot from the installation media it does not detect any drives, even though the drives are detected by the BIOS. If I run the setup from within Windows (like I am doing an upgrade) it detects the drives fine but if I actually try to install the OS this way it just goes into a reboot loop. I was hoping this was going to be a simple driver issue but no drivers appear to be available on the WD site for internal drives. If I boot to Server 2008 installation media from the BIOS the drives are there.

I read inanother post while researching that there was a workaround:

Ok, I seem to have found a workaround for the issue. I tried to install Windows XP onto the drive and it found the drive, formatted it, and started installing with no problem. I broke the XP install and tried it with my Windows 7 disc and this time it found the drive with the partition that was created by Windows XP.

This doesnt seem like a great solution to me, is there any other way to get the drives detected in Server 2012? Thanks in advance on this.

Hello, welcome to the community.

I’m sorry to read that you are unable to install the Windows server 2012 r2 on your server.

I saw once that someone was having this issue, and from the installation media they ran a command prompt and cleaned the drive from any partition and formatted the drive from there and then Win Server was able to see the drive then. However they had a backup of the information before doing this.

Another thing that you can try is running the same hard drive on a different computer and booting using the same media and see if its recognizable.
