WARNING: Your ClamAV installation is OUTDATED! error when running AV

I’ve been trying to get the included “Anti Virus Essentials” app working on my MyCloud running Firmware Version : 5.26.300.

After giving up on the UI never updating the definitions file - I enabled ssh and was able to use the “freshclam” command to update the virus definitions.

Now, when I try to scan the device, I see the error:

WARNING: Your ClamAV installation is OUTDATED!
WARNING: Local version: 0.103.5 Recommended version: 0.103.8
DON’T PANIC! Read Installing - ClamAV Documentation
and it blocks me from connecting to the ClamAV content delivery system.

I cannot figure out how to Update this app - no package tools seems to be available on this device like rpm, apt, etc. The WD UI doesn’t have any Update option.

If I try using the scan tool - it never starts - it stays at 0% for days. I believe this is why.

Any ideas?

Hi,

What NAS are you using?
ClamAV is infamously known for being the slowest thing on MyCloud.

Regarding the outdated version, it’s been months since we’ve had a proper update and WD did not release explanations or roadmap to let us know where these NASes are going.

Since WD was hacked, we only got minor updates to apparently fix everything that was not OK security wise.

It’s unclear when we will get a new update with newer version and whether WD will move the firmware form Debian 10 (Buster) to Debian 11 (Bullseye) or even 12 (Bookworm) which use a more recent codebase, including ClamAV. Although, it’s unclear whether this would fix the performance issue that makes it virtually useless on less capable hardware. I have stop trying to use it on my MyCloud EX2 Ultra.

Hi Austin. Thanks for your quick response.

Yea - I have the two bay MyCloud EX2 Ultra.

Do you know if there’s a scan log or progress indicator of what it is actually doing? The WD UI is useless here - as it always shows 0% and it never finishes.

So MCH got Debian 11 on august 1st with its newer firmware 9.5.0-186.

So we should get an updated My Cloud OS5 firmware as well sometimes soon with not as old software versions, since Debian is meant to be running older / more solid software, and in addition WD chose to rely on the oldstable branch and not the stable branch.
