WD 1tb Passport Essential doesn't show in my Computer

I have an issue with my WD 1 TB Passport hard drive.

Till yesterday this drive was working fine. I was watching a movie off the drive when it suddenly and abruptly disconnected itself from my PC. There was no interruption in power and nothing was moved to cause it to disconnect.

Upon investigation I’ve discovered that the Hd was registering in the Device Manager and show no conflict or issues. It also appears in my Device and Printers utility.

The Hd will not appear in My computer nor in the Disk Manager.

I have done the following to try to correct this issue.

  • I’ve disconnected, reconnected the drive, as well as restarted the PC,

  • I have a couple WD drives so first I changed the USB cable, to insure it wasn’t a cable issue,

  • I’ve plugged the device into a different computer to see if it works on the other PC (It doesn’t)

  • I’ve disable and enabled the device in the Device manager, as well as un-and re-installed the device,

  • I’ve downloaded and attempted to diagnose the problem using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows and HD Tune (the software doesn’t even see the device)

  • and I’ve attempted to update the firmware (again the device isn’t seen) and

  • ran a virus scan to confirm no virus issues.

Other symptoms I’ve noticed is the Hard Drive when connected to the computer seem to freeze (during the BOIS setup) the computer during a reboot.

It also causes a drag on the computer while running. Some applications seem to take forever or don’t boot at all till the drive is disconnected.

I’ve scoured the web, looking for solutions in forums, mostly only to find suggestions to ‘change the drive letter’ or use software that doesn’t even see the Hd.

This hard contains all my digital movies so I prefer NOT to format it unless necessary.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I’m Having same problem with my passport which is only 4 days old.  Any way to get to files before replacement?  Because i am mot computer literate I moved as in did not copy files to this devise and now i cannot access them.  What to do?
