WD Blue Mobile SATA III backward compatible to SATA I?

I want to buy  WD5000LPVX and it is backward compatible to SATA II connection. But to SATA I connection, is it compatible? Because I want to insert it on my PlayStation 3. I heard that PS3 can run WD SATA II HDD without installing any jumper.

But, a CS staff linked me to  WD Caviar Black and instructed me to install the jumper. I think he misunderstood. So this is confusing me.

Can someone confirm?

Hi OK the WD5000LPVX is a 2.5 laptop drive the drive WD Caviar Black you where linked to is for a 3.5 desktop drive. The laptop drive has no jumpers to set it to sata 2 or sata 1. This drive is a sata 2 drive and should work OK on a sata 1 controller of course depending what sata controller the ps3 has. WD5000BPVT. If the ps3 takes a 3.5 drive the black drive you where linked to will go back to sata 1

Make a little correction here. WD5000LPVX is SATA III (6 Gb/s) already.

The PS3 had SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) controller. The requirements for its HDD were:

  • Internal HDD with 2.5"

  • SATA I

  • 9.5mm max height

  • 5400 RPM recommended

A SATA II (3 Gb/s) HDD will run on PS3 obviously. So now, can a SATA III HDD run on SATA I controller?

Really many thanks for your answers…

Problem solved. The CS has told me yesterday that it’s not compatible to SATA I (1.5 Gb/s).
