WD drive loosing all data despite uninstalled software

Ok, this problem with WD drives and Mavericks is a desaster.

I have just lost 2TB of data on a mirrored MyBook drive. The data is not recoverable - most of it isn’t and what it is, doesn’t help me. I have spent > 100 USD on Data Rescue, Data Recover etc. useless.

I did uninstall the software as soon as I heard of the problem. No use. The data is gone.

WD better fix this issue quickly. I can only recommend that you immediately backup your drive to a storage system by another vendor. Do not rely on the fact that you can still access it.

I am going to trash my WD Mybook now and get myself a Seagate drive and a NAS.

I have had the same problem my WD drive was not used for two months before I installed Maverick. But I did not get any warning from Western Digital and had one piece of their software installed in a folder BackUp software, which I have never used. I have had a Seagate 4tb and a Drobo D5 16TB drive wiped. So it does not matter which make of drive you have, as you say it is a virus.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see where the original poster says it’s a virus.  We’re still working on a fix for this, but it’s not a virus.

Hi, I don’t have anything in my private inbox asking for more information. I have offers to call me - which is nice, but no thank you.

I would suggest that WD look into:

  • confirm that your uninstallation software actually completely uninstalls the WD software from the Mac

I suspect that the data loss is related to the WD driver/software suddenly reconfiguring the RAID without the user asking for this and without telling the user or showing any message.

When the data loss occured, my harddrive (which was configured as RAID 1 with volume name “EXT2TB”) showed a different volume name: MyBook. I believe that this is the default volume name assigned when you reconfigure the RAID. The drive was empty.

Basically, one day I switched on the WD MyBook drive and it came up with the “MyBook” volume name and empty.

Since you only support RAID 0 and RAID 1, you should really have used a mechanical switch on the case rather than this software which now causes great misery across the globe.

If you contracted someone to write that software for you, I suggest you consider taking them to court.

Yes, we have been able to confirm that the WD Software Uninstaller completley uninstalls The WD SmartWare and WD Drive Manager software from your Mac.

Some people really believe that simple uninstallation of WD Drive Manager and Smartware will immediately give their data back. Unfortunately, that’s no true. Since RAID configuration has changed and involved drive actually reformatted, it won’t come back to previous state by itself. So, data restoration process should be the next step after WD utilities are wiped - e.g. using Ontrack Data Recovery provided by WD.
