WD external hard disk suddenly stopped working

Hi, my external hard disk suddenly stopped working. The hard disk light is blinking, and I do not hear any sounds apart from a fan wheezing sound which I had heard since at the start when I bought this product. I was even able to detect my hard disc in disk management, and I could even see how much space I have left on my hard disk. I tried contacting Microsoft Support and I’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps, but none of them worked. I tried plugging my other USB into my laptop, and it seemed to be working fine. I also tried to plug my WD external hard disk into my MacBook Air and that also failed and came up with an error saying “Not recognised”. I had also contacted Apple support, and they also told me to contact the manufacturer. I had also tried to reformat the external hard disk but I wasn’t able to do so. I also couldn’t even assign a letter for my hard disk. I hope someone is able to help me.

My external hard disk model is: 1311B
S/N: [Deleted]

I FIXED IT!. I didn’t change the hardware parts or anything!. All I did was that when I clicked initialised in Disk Management, I clicked the second bullet point not the first!. After that, I just created a new volume and ran a recovery software on it. Done and dusted!

Hello,

Thank you for sharing the solution to your issue.

Hi Jeff, what recovery software did you use. My laptop battery died when I was using My Passport (listening to music) when I turned it on, it wasn’t able to read My Passport anymore, tried different PC’s, same, it shows that it there, but doesn’t read anything off it, I might need to do the same thing you did.

Hi Haroon, The recovery software I used are Recuva and EaseUS software recovery. Now, I personally think that EaseUS software is the best BUT they only recover 2GB of data and if you want to recover more you have to pay.

When you say “it shows that it there, but doesn’t read anything off it” do you mean your external hard disk is only visible in disk management? If so can you initialise the disk?

Best of luck,
Jeff

Hi Jeff, thank you for your email, by “initializing” do you mean
formatting? I have tons of data on mypassport, and I really don’t wanna
loose any of it. I have 8GB of songs, plus pictures, resumes, tons of
stuff, I wish to keep all of it. I will try EaseUS as you have suggested.
If it’s not too expensive and if I’m left with no choice, then I’ll buy it.
Thank you so much for your support n guidance.

Rgds
Haroon

Sorry that I could not be much help. To be honest I’m actually stuck at finding a good and free recovery software too. So please do message me if you found a good and free recovery software.

How are you going so far?

Hi Jeff, thank you for asking, I’m going to Miami next week, will look into
it when I come back.

Have a great one.
Haroon
