WD Live Connection to external hard drive

Hi, 

I have a WD Live and when I connect it to my WD My Book Essential External 2TB Hard Drive via any USB port, the WD Live freezes.  I doesn’t recognized the the drive and slows it down to a hault.

I just bought both items and have the firmware updated to the latest version.  

Does the hard drive need to be formatted in such a way to make it compatible?  Is there anything I can do to make them compatible with each other?

The USB port works with flash drives.
