WD LIVE + Windows 7 64 - using playon to control wd tv from my PC - can't do it

Hi -

I am usually pretty good at this stuff but I am stumped.  I just bought the WD tv media player specifically I wanted to control was was playing on my TV from my laptop.  I have windows 7 x64 and WMP 12.

Currently I dont have a external HDD attached to the WD unit - so just TV, WD unit, and laptop

Right now using the remote control i can play movies/music off of my laptop so I know i am connected.

When I try to use the right click → Play To → WDTVLIVE it does open a dialog box

I can see that it is connected and it identifies WDTVLIVE / western digital corp/

for the item I select it hangs on and says “Contacting Media Server…”  eventually it times out “Failed to retrieve media information from media server - the selected media cannot be played on device.  Either the format was not supported on the computer or the computer or media that contains the media is offline”

the weird thing is - using the remote I can access my laptop thru the WD device and play things off of my laptop (movies and audio).  and when the play to window opens up and if i click on the play button it interupts whatever is playing.  So I can get into my laptop thru the device - and i know there is some type of 2 way communication.  But I cant send from my laptop into the device into the TV.

help!

I’m having the same problem when I try to use “Play to” option on Windows 7.

I’ve tried to turn of the firewall, change my sharing options, change the AVG antivirus configuration… and nothing works.

Does any one knows what the f"#$T& is happend???

What sort of media files did you try?

Keep in mind, that the Windows PlayTo supports only media types that Windows Mediaplayer can play natively. So, for instance, if you would like to stream mkv files via PlayTo, you have to install  the matroska splitter first.

Cheers,

Even when I try to play a mp3 file nothing happend…
