WD My Book Studio II 2Tb RAID 0 degraded mode

Hi, I have a My Book Studio II 2Tb in RAID 0 under Mac OS X Snow Leopard and connected with Firewire 400 to a Mac Mini for some years now.

This morning it started to fail. I looked the LEDs and the user manual and saw that it was in Degraded Mode. I installed WD Manager and also said it was in degraded mode.

I unplugged and plugged again and worked for like 30 minutes or so. And then, again it wouldn’t show and LEDs were in degraded mode.

I connected the WD My Book Studio II to a Macbook Pro thru Firewire 800 and worked again (I copied  and save some of the data inside it).

I don’t know what to do. Is this a problem that it will always be like this? Or could it work fine now?

In case that the problem persists. If I format the hard drives with it work again or do I have to buy new hard drives?

If I have to buy new hard drives, could they be any hard drive or do they have to be specific ones?

You might need to replace one of the drives. In the drive manager check the drive status and see which one failed. They need to have same model and firmware to work with the enclosure, if the drive is under warranty  it will be a lot easier for you, you will just replace and get a similar one.

Wizer is right.  That’s usually an indication that one of the drives is failing, or that the raid controller is failing.  there are two ways you can go.  if drive manager says it’s one of the drives, and you’re still under warranty, then you can either replace the bad drive, or replace the whole unit.  Either way, I wouldn’t be putting more data on that drive.  Make sure you have all your data backed up in another location before you start this process, though.  If you’re using raid 0, you will lose all your data on the drive when you replace the bad drive.

Thank you very much to both of you.

A couple of hours ago I plug the unit to my mac mini and works normally =/

I will make a backup in case it happens again, and if it does I will see about replacing the hard drives.

Again, thank you very much for your replies

our pleasure.
