I have bought the WD My Cloud 2TB drive. I am trying to setup the WD Sync. I have one windows 10 machine and one MacBook pro which I am trying to synchronized the files between. It looks like that the files are been uploaded and synchronized to the drive but they do not replicate to the other machine (macbook to windows and vice versa). So if I add a file from Windows, it does not show up in Macbook and if I add the file from Macbook it does not synchronize on Windows machine. However, they do appear in the same “WD Sync” folder in the My Cloud drive. I am using the same WD Cloud user account on both the computers.
Will greatly appreciate if anyone could guide me if I am doing something wrong.
I may be wrong but the MyCloud will have files sync’d from each device. So if you need access to files from your Mac the NAS has it. I do not believe it will auto sync to the other device.
Well the introductory videos I watched on youtube about the device suggested that the device will push the changes to the other computer. It will be really great if it does that.
Hmm…I did see that topic. But right at the end someone mentioned that they were able to do it. So not sure if it is suppose to push the files or not. It looks like some users were able to push the files to their other computers.
If you do a forum search (magnifying glass icon upper right) for WD Sync you’ll find several past discussions on trying to sync multiple computers to the same sync folder on the My Cloud mostly with mixed results.
Bottom line is that sometimes WD Sync will sync properly, sometimes not when multiple computers use the same sync folder. The general consensus is that the WD Sync program often fails to sync properly if more than one WD Sync program attempts to use the same sync folder location on the My Cloud.
Because of the various sync issues people are having with WD Sync, some have resorted to using third party sync software like Free File Sync (http://freefilesync.org/) to sync their computers to the My Cloud.
There is also the issue of incomparable file formats or types between Windows and Macintosh file systems.
After the migration to OSX, the insistence on resource forks in the HFS+ filesystem has been relaxed. It is perfectly possible to mount and use NFS volumes from an OSX host.
That has been the historical issue with Mac<->PC file transfers, and is what old tools like BinHEX and stuffit addressed. Modern day, the only real outstanding issue is the text file format difference. (OSX uses Unix style text files, while Windows uses MSDos style.)
Other than that, the two are very interoperable i the modern world.
I would second not using the WDSync software. I would suggest either FreeFileSync, or some front end to rsync, given that you want to use delta-only transfers. (JUST changes, not whole files)
The Gen2 mycloud DEFINITELY responds to rsync over ssh connections out of the box. (Well, after enabling ssh) I tested it a few hours ago.
