WD TV Live cannot see Synology DS212 Media Server

It seems my WDTV Live cannot see the DLNA media server running on my Synology DS212 where it used to be able to see it.  I’m running the latest firmware on both devices.

So, from the home menu, if I select (say) Photos and then Media Servers, the DS212 media server is not displayed an a option to select.

I am able to select media servers running on my laptop from the WDTV Live.  I am able to connect to the network share on my DS212 from my WDTV Live.  I am able to connect to the media server on my DS212 from my laptop and my PS3.

I’ve tried power cycling my WDTV Live.  I’ve tried adding rules to my DS212 firewall to allow access to all ports from all source IPs.  I’ve tried rebooting my DS212.  I’ve tried refreshing the device list in the DS212 Media Server settings.  I’ve tried changing the type of device associated with the WDTV Live IP address from a WDTV Live profile to a generic profile.  Nothing seems to work.

I’ve requested customer support from Synology as the firmware on the DS212 has been recenlty updated.  Clearly, the firmware on my WDTV Live has not changed for some time.

Anyone else getting these issues?  Anyone got any ideas?  Anyone successfully accessing the Synology media server on version 4.0-2198 of Disk Station Manager from their WDTV Live, or is it just me with an issue?

Incidentally, all devices are on a wired network.

well If you were able to see it before, something might have changed… try doing a factory reset on the media player. also check to see if there is any firewall in the router blocking that connection.

Tried a factory reset.  Unfortunately, that didn’t work.  There aren’t any rules set on the router and, besides, the WDTV Live can see the media server on my laptop…it’s just the DS212 media server it can’t see.

Synology Customer Support have replied and made some suggestions.  I’ve followed all of these but it hasn’t made any difference.

Well, after many nights trying to get my WDTV Live to see my DS212 Media Server, I’ve finally cracked it.  I’ve actually rather glad as it means I can avoid a night pouring over Wire Shark logs to try and identify the problem.  i did spend some time using UPnPInspector and everything looked OK.

The solution?  DHCP!  A number of the devices on my home network have reserved IP addresses.  So, I made the lot dynamic.  I turned off all the devices (at the wall) and then rebooted the router.  Ta da!  All sorted.  Clearly, something, somewhere had got its knickers in a twist and a change to the configuration of the network managed to flush to through.

Hmm.  The one fix I wanted on the latest firmware (the one no-one likes) doesn’t appear to have been fixed…that is random playback of audio files.  In fact, I think I can state with some confidence, that it’s actually less random than ever!  **bleep**!  Oh, and my network shares (which were working) have stopped working.  Double **bleep**.
