WD TV Live Plus vs WD TV Live SMP

I am new at this, and I am in the market.

On eBay is WD TV Live Plus and also WD TV Live SMP.  What is the difference.  I can not find the WD TV Live Plus on the WD website.  Is  it an older version?

The Live Plus is an older version. If you get anything its best to go for the Live Streaming Player.

Hello,

The WDTV Live Plus is no longer under production, it’s a 2009-10 model.

The WDTV Live Streaming Media Player (SMP) came out in late 2011-12.

I just bought a WD TV Live SMP to replace my Live Plus that is going on the fritz. I can categorically say that the Live SMP is much slower than the Live Plus. Netflix is a complete dog and even going between pages when I click the remote is laborious.

The Live SMP has a much fancier UI, but from what I can tell all the UI eye-candy just **bleep** up CPU cycles and turns the device into a turtle.

I am thinking of returning the Live SMP and finding a used Live Plus instead.

I somewhat agree with Sniglet. I don;t have an SMP so cannot compare, but I use a HUB in the main TV rooms and my old LivePlus in the bedroom. It is soooo much faster than the HUB when navigating through directory structures, both over Windows Shares, and from a DLNA server I use (PlayON). I do understand why, and it’s an extremely basic interface, but it works really well, and when you simply want to find a movie and press play, the LivePlus is screaming fast.

Dont get me wrong, for the main TV room I want all the bells and whistles, movies sheets etc, but I am always impressed when I use the LivePlus at how well is “just works”.

The live plus only does Netflix in north america. The live streaming does Netflix world wide.

With the live plus you have to buy a compatible WiFi adaptor (extremly difficult), the live streaming has WiFi built in.

Only the WDTV Live Streaming Media Player (2011 model) and WDTV Play (2013 model) have built-in WiFi adapters.

The WDTV Live (2009 model) Live Plus and Live Hub are WiFi compatible, but it is not built-in.
