WD TV SMP freezes all the time

I have a WD TV SMP that freezes on the menu when I plug in my 3 TB Hitachi external drive (with about 1 TB full of videos).  Seems to happen randomly, but happening more and more often now.   I have the fancy indexing feature turned off, and don’t understand why it does this.  

When I plug in the HDD, I wait for the light to stop flashing, when it does, I’m frozen on the main menu with Video highlighted.  When I yank out the external, it sometimes wakes up.  Sometimes not.

Is it plugged into the front port or rear port? If it’s plugged into the rear USB port try the front.

Thanks, I always use the front port.

I tried deleting the .wdtv directory, which noticeably decreased the number of freezes so far, but still am having at least one a day.  Even during playback of H264 MKV and xvid/divx.  

I guess it’s a crashy unit, hope a new firmware stabilizes it in the near future.

I bought a First Gen WD TV when they came out and still use it for another TV in the house, it has always had a freezing problem too, but not nearly as bad as the SMP.

1.) Try a factory reset
2.) Try downgrading to FW 1.04 - see If it makes a difference.
3.) Return if under 30 days
