Hello:
I’m creating a non-boot RAID 1: can I use these two 1T drives, or is there some significant difference between them that would create a problem? I’ve made no attempt to update firmware.
Thanks, wikksmith
Homebuild with Gigabyte GA-P67-UD7-B3 with Intel ICH10R controller/Intel 2600k/Intel SSD boot drive/Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
I have 2 x WD1001FALS-00J7B1 with linux (mdadm) software raid and no problems.
I don’t know yet if there is any difference between them but i do asume that they fuction the same…because… they are the same model… or similar…
No problem for software raid.
For hardware raid and fakeraid (what you probably will use) i don’t know if these drives will do.
You may try, but if you do, i recomend testing the raid (faking a disk replacement) before putting important data on it. I don’t like fakeraid at all.

Here is a discusion regarding TLER on different WD1001FALS drives.

I do not agree to what WD is doing with the TLER and this ‘segmentation’ in general. It is really bad PR.
This poisons the trust in WD regarding firmware managent and raises fears for the future.
What’s next? a ‘brown’ edition that cannot perform random seeks and works as a tape?
But i only use software raid, so as long it does not mess with that i will buy WD. Anyways, there will be not many companies
in the future (Seagate[PoC], WD, ??). The fears are serious, not now, but maybe en one and a half year in the future.
I hope your raid works.
OK - Thanks for the info. I’ll have to look into the update issue, otherwise I may just another pair of Samsung F3s, which are working great In a RAID on another system.
